Description

i P. KEFFER. Sash Holder.
Patented 'No'v. 2,1869.

PETER kunnen, or BnnKs COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, AssfeNoR To HIMSELF, I.' s.
HOYER, AND SOLOMON A. STOUI, OF SAME BLAOE.
i v Letters Patent No. 96,325, dated November 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMET IN SASH-SUPPORTER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, PETER KEFFER, in the count of Berks, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WindoW-Sash Supporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
'lhe nature of my invention consists in a double bracket, constructed of a single piece of met-al, which has two rollers in connection, that have their bearings in spring slides connected with the bracket, there being two of' the brackets in connection with each window, and so arranged and connected with the jambs of the latter as to cause a roller to bear on each vertical edge of both the upper and lower sashes, respectively, the friction of' said rollers on the sashes, in connection with the force of the springs, holding them in any adjusted position.
To enable persons skilled inthe art to-which my in. vention appertains, to apply it to practice, I will now describe the construe-tionI and operation of the device.
In the accompanying drawings, w'hich make a part of this specification- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a window-frame, at' right angles with thefront ofthe same, and represents the improved holder in connection with one of the jambs A.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section, at the line a b of fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an isomet'rical view of' the double bracket B on au enlarged scale.
Figure 4 is a like view of one of the roller springslides. l
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts. i
In 4each jamb A, of the window-frame, I insert a double bracket, B, which is provided with slides O O,
having rollers D D, whose journals, a, have a free e movement in the slots b of 'the bracket, to allow an automat-ic movement, inward and outward, of the rollers, to compensate for `any inequalities of' the edges of the sashes, as the latter are moved up and down.
' The springs E, on the stems F of the slides C, bearv the latter outward to force the rollers D against the edges of the sashes, as seen in g. 2. The stems F slide in corresponding holes, d, in the brackets B, seen in lig. 3, in which thel bracket is represented in detail.
A detailed view of a slide, O,'is given in fig. 4. The brackets B are confined in the recesses e of the rjambs A by means of screws f, as seen in iig. 1, there being holes, g, for that' purpose, in the flanges h.
The brackets B are s'o placed that the inner rollers O shall bear against the edges of the bottom sash opposite the top rail, when the sash is in its lowest position, the outer rollers, consequently, bearing against the edges of the upper sash, opposite its bottom rail, when said sash is in its most elevated position. And hence the rollers are caused to act upon each sash respectively, in any altitude in which it is placed, hold ing the same securely, except when force is applied to move it up or down, in which case they roll freely, their journals turning in their bearings in the slides C and the slots b of the brackets B.
I vusually construct the rollers O of India rubber or other similarly yielding material, to give ease and freedom of'inotion, and cause their peripheries to hug the sashes.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe double bracket B, constructed of' a single piece of metal, and provided with slots b, spring-slides O O, and rollers D D, in combination with the jambsAA, when arranged to operate in relation to the upper and lower sashes as hercinbefore described.
In testimony that the above is my invention, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal, this 121st day of July, 1869.` v PETER KEFFER. [n s.]
