Letters Patent No. 96,256, dated October 26, 1869.
IMPROVED cARnrAGn-sH cKLE.
To all whom it may concern:
 Be it known that I, F. B. MORSE, of Plantsville, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in- Carriage-Shackles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken-in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent in Figure 1, a side view;'
Figure 2, a top view;
Figure 3, a sectional view; and in Figure 4, a perspective view of the clip and coupling.
 -This invention relates to an improvement in carriage-shackles, such as are designed for light, or what are termed trotting-carriages, the object being-to construct a shackle of great strength, yet extremely light. To this end,
 The invention consists in constructing upon the carriage-clip the ears and bar, to which the shackle is attached, the clip, ears, and bar being all in one piece, thus'dispensing with the usual holt.
 To enable others to construct and use my improvement, I willfully describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
 A is the clip, its two ends provided bolt-blanks, B B, and, at the point where it -is desired to attach the shaft, I form a loop, C, as seen -in fig. 4, so as to make a cross-bar, D, in front, and to this cross-bar the shackle is secured in any convenient manner. The
best device known to me is that shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3.
 A grooved cylinder, I is constructed so as to pass on over the bar I), as seen in fig. 3.
 The shackle or couplingL is constructed with a groove upon its upper surface, so that when placedin the position denoted in red, it willslide'onto the cylinder, the groove passing over the ears or end of the bar D, and, when properly placed, a key, F, is inserted, which fills the groove, as. seen in figs. 1, 2, and 3, a bolt, G, being attached to the said key, with a nut, I, upon the under side, so as to draw the said key down to its seat. The screw itself being made slightly tapering, as seen in fig. 3, binds the shackle firmly to the bar D, so as to prevent its rattling.
 I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming a grooved cylinder upona fiat bar, so as toform a healing for the carriage-shackle, as such, I am aware,
is not new but \Vhat I-do claim as my invention, and desire t9 secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A carriage-clip, having the bar D forged thereon, in-one and the same piece, for the purpose of coupling the shackle thereto.
 2. In con bi-iation with the bar D, the grooved cylinder E, col pli lg L, and bolt-key F'G, constructed so as to operate in the manner described.
.F. B. MORSE.
