TO-ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:" v
Be it known that' I, JAMES P. TUORP, of Southington, in the county of Hartford, `and State cfCvonnecticut,
.have invented a, new and improved TMll-Coupling; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and enact description thereof, ,which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use tbesztme. vreference' being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a. part of this specification. e
vThis invention is designed to supersede the ordinary leather safety-striips,"\vhich are employed to-obviate accidents in' the event of the breaking of the coupling, the casual detachment .of the bolt therefrom, Ste.
Theinvention consists in having a hook formed on the plete of Vthe clip, said hook passing through the thill-iron, in front of the eye through rvhich the bolt passes, as 'hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the desired end is attaine A v In the accompanying sheet of drawings-'- vFigure 1 is a side view of my invention. 4
Figure 2 a plan or top view of the saine.
Similer letters of reference indicotecorrespondilng parts. v A t A represents the front axle ofva wheel-vohicle, B the clip on the same, and C the plate underneath the axle, through which the ends of the-clip pass, and have screw-nutsa on them, underneath the platte. v
The plate Crextends' forward of the axle, and has :in uprighgl, at each side of it, throughwhich c bolt, D, passes. l I l E represents the thillfiron, tolewliich the rear end of the thill is attached as usuelt The thill-iron has an eye, c, formed onits rear end, and this eye is titted between the upper ends ofthe uprights 6 6, and the bolt D passes through it, and connects the thill` to the axle.
The front e'nd'ot` the plate has ahook, F, formed on it, and this hook extends upward through'an opening in the tliill-iron.4 Thishook should be curved Vat its upper part, so 'as to be a portion of a circle, of which `the bolt D is` the centre,to admit of a'. free vertical motion or play of the thill-iron.
It will be seen, f'roinn the above description, that if the bolt D breaks, or should be casually withdrawn, the hook F will hold the-thill, or4 prevent it becoming detached frourthe axle.
Having thus described mynvention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- -The hook F, applied to the thill-coupling, and pssingV through a hole in the thilllwire, to operate in Vthe wanner substantially-as and for the purpose eet forth. Y The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 20th day of February, 1868.
Y JAMES P. frHoRP.
