'iU ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J.v E. PRUDDEN, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented anew Improvementin Adjustable Pole for Carriages; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figur 1, a top view.
Figure 2, a front view; and in Figure 3, a section on line o a.
This invention is designed to make a carriage pole adjustable, so that it maybe attached to different carriages, the couplings in which are at difl'erent distances; and consists in the peculiar manner of attaching the shackle to the cross-bar of the pole so that the shackles may be set at different distances from each other, as occasion may require.
To enable others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the shackle, formed with a socket, B, to fit the coupling on the axle, C the cross-bar ot the pole, upon the under side of' which is formed a recess, D, and below the said recess a plate, E, is attached to the cross-hm, and the shackle A formed so as to be placed on over the plate E, as seen in fig. 3. One edge of the plate E is inclined as at a, and through the shackle A a key-bolt, F, is placed, having its head inclined to correspond to the inclinc'on the plate E, so thatby turning the nut G on to the bolt F, the inclined part of the bolt F draws down firmly against and upon the incline upon the plate E, and secures the shackle in that position.
When it is desired to adjust the pole, loose the nut G and move the shackle on the plate E along the recess l), and, when in the required position, turn the nut G hard down, and secure the shackle in that position.
I do not broadly claim an adjustable carriage pole, but, having thus fully described my invention, what I do claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the key-bolt F, the inclined plate E, and the shackle A, when constructed and arranged so as to he adjustable, substantially in the manner specified.
