MARVIN MEAD, OF AUGUSTA, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHAFT-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,307, dated January 30, 1866.
To all whom ct may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN MEAD, of Augusta, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Shaft-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
A represents the clip, which is a metallic plate with suitable openings for the screws to pass when attached to the vehicle. At the end of this clip two jaws are formed by turning the metal and forming a circle, as seen at D. D is the other jaw, which forms but a half-circle.
B is the shank, which is attached to the clip A by having a cylindrical horizontal bar attached to it, as seen at as. This bar passes into an opening made for it in the jaw D, jaw D being but a half-circle, for the purpose of allowing the baron to pass into the opening in jaw D, as described.
0 represents an india-rubber spring, which is fastened to the clip A by a pin passing through the rubber and the clip. This spring is directly under the bar as of the shank B, and prevents the noise that arises from the ordinary shaft-couplin gs, and at the sametime prevents the wear of the bar ac. A sectional view of the shaft-coupling is shown in Fig. 1 in the accompanying drawings, with the spring 0, heretofore described.
The clip A is secured to the vehicle when in use, and-the shank B to the shaft. It will be seen that whenever it is necessary to take the shafts from the vehicle, by raising the same perpendicularly and then drawing it to the left it can be taken apart without the necessity of bolts or screws. \Vhenever it is attached to the vehicle, the shank B, secured to the shaft, is held secure between the jaws D and D.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The clip A, constructed as described, to hold the shank B, said clip being provided with a countersink beneath the end of the shank, in which countersink is placed a piece of indiarubber or other elastic material, which is there held by means of a pin which passes through the clip, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
