IMPROVEMENT IN ATTAGHING THILLS TO VEHICLES;
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EDWARDM. BUTLER, of Croton Falls, in the county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shaft or Thill-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being ha l to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of the present invention is to prevent the rattling noise and wear of the centre-bolt or pin by which the shafts or thills are hung or pivoted to the couplings; and for this purpose the invention consists in a novel application to the said centre-pin or bolt of an elastic cushion or cushions, whereby the desired end is effected, as will be apparent from the following detail description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the coupling, and
Figure 2 a transverse section taken. in the plane of the angular line a z, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents a shaft or thill-coupling which is of the usual form and shape, B being the section applied to the axle of the carriage,and C the section applied to the shaft or thill, and the two being hung or pivoted together by a centre-bolt or pin, D. This centre-pin D, in lieu of being made of a continuous piece, is,'in the present invention, divided into two parts or sections, E and F, one of which, E, is fixed to or forms a part of one arm, G, of the axle-section B, while the other, F, is provided with a screw-thread, or, in other words, is made in the form of a thumb or set-screw, and screws into and through the other arm H of the axlesection in a line with the fixed portion E of the centre-pin. I, a rubber cushion placed in bearings J of shaft-section of the coupling, where, by the screwing in or out of the set or thumb-screw F, it is either more 01 less compressed by and between its end and the end of the fixed portion E of the centre-pin; the said thumbscrew being set in any position by jamming the nut L upon the same against the arm H of the axle-section of the shaft couplin'g.
By the use of the rubber cushion 1 or its equivalent in the turning point or centre of the coupling, as above described, all rattling of the coupling is obviated, and its running increased in wear.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Latent, is-
The rubber cushion I, or its equivalent, applied to the centre-pin of shaft-couplings, substantially as and for the purpose described.
EDWD M. BUTLER.
