SAFETY GUARD OR SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 24,, 1910,
Application filed November 10, 1908. Serial No. 461,861.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN B. MELIUS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety Guard or Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to guards for watches and the like, and its object is to provide a new and improved safety guard or support, which is simple and durable in construction, exceedingly strong, and arranged to hold an article such as a watch, garment or the like securely in position and against accidental detachment or forcible removal by unauthorized persons.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improvement.
The improved safety guard or support is preferably made from a single piece of spring wire bent to form a safety pin, having a pin A proper terminating at one end in a coil B, from which extends the top member C provided at its free end with a catch D to receive the point of the pin A, as plainly indicated in the drawings. The top member C is bent to form at or near its middle a loop G, the throat C of which is adjacent to the pin A, and the ends of the loop C terminate in return bends C forming auxiliary loops terminating in the ends of the member (1. The return bends C overlie the pin A when the latter is in a closed position, and the auxiliary loops render the top member G exceedingly strong and allow the throat C to open and close more or less, especially when pushing the loop 0 into engagement with the stem E of a watch, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
In using the device the loop C is engaged with the stem E and the pin A is pinned to the garment F, so that the watch is held against accidental detachment on the garment and against forcible removal by 11nauthorized persons. By having the return bend C overlying the pin A, the loop C is held against movement in a transverse direction, and by having the auxiliary loops open outwardly the side members of the loop G are permitted to yield when forcing the throat C over the stem E of the watch or other article.
Although the device is shown as a safety guard, it is evident that it may be used for other purposes, for instance, as a garment or other support, and hence I do not limit myself to any particular use of the device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A device of the class described comprising a pin and a top member connected at one end by a coil, the top member having a loop at its other end for engagement by the free end of the pin, said top member having at approximately its center an open loop opening toward the pin, and on each side of the open loop a secondary loop opening away from the pin for the urpose specified, the junction of the secon ary loop with the primary loop overlying the pin.
