C. M. HUOKINS, ,OF EASTv TOPSHAM, VERMONT.
Lette/rs Patent No. 95,801, daft-ell October 12, 1869.
IMPROVE!) BRIDLE-BIT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, C. M. HUGKINS, of East '.lopsham, in the county oi' Orange, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridle-Bits; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable those skilled iuthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a perspective view of my improved bridle-bit.
This invention relates to a new bridle-bit for horses, which shall be so constructed that it may be used as a. straight rigid bit, or asa power-bit, when driving or riding an unruly orv hard-mouthed horse, and which shall be so constructed as to give the rider` or driver full control over the horse.
' lhe invention consists in the application of toggleward, so as to lic closely along the rear side oi' the main arms A, they hold the said arms securely locked, forming a straight rigid bit.
When the toggle-arms or levers Vl are drawn back into the position shown in the drawings, the bit becomes a jointed bit.
By this construction, when the reins'zn'e drawn upon, the bit is forced against the tender inner sides of the horses jaws, and the middle or joint of the bit against the bottom of his inontln'l'orcing him to yield at once to the will of the rider or driver.
A bit thus constructed, a horse cannot hold with his teeth. or disiignre him in any way, and will not slide in his mouth, being thus invalmddelbr hitting young horses, subduing unruly horses, or driving lhard mouthed horses.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The toggle-levers B B, arranged ou the arms of a jointed bit, substantially as' herein shown and described, for the purpose specified. (l. M. HUCKINS.
