TO ALL .WHOM 11 MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. DONEHOO, of Beaver, in the county of Beaver, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improved Safety-Bridle; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, suflicient to enable one skilled in the art to which it appertains to construet'and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made part ofthis specification.
The driving-reins are made hollow, and carry a safety-rein, which is connected to rings on the gag-rein, just in the rear of the gag-runners. Force applied to the safety-rein shortens up the gag-reimand draws the bitrings towards the rings on the cheek-strap by drawing the forward ends of the rear portion through rings in the rear end of the forward portion, and giving an increased power on the bit as the rear portion of the rein is doubled on itself, and each forward portion is carried around the bit-ring and cheek-ring before being attached to the bit-ring.
In the drawings, A is the gig-saddle; B, the hooli for the bearing-rein; C, the driving-rein, passing through.
the martingale-ring D to the ring E of the bit. considerable portion of the driving-rein is made hollow-so as to contain the safety-rein F, which is attached to a ring, on the gag-rein. The gag-rein consists of three pieces, the central portion H, which goes over the hook B and comes forward to the roller-rings I, which are on the forward portions, J, of the gag-rein, which pass through the gag-ru nnersK around the rings E, thence up the checks over the rings L of the cheek-straps M, and thence down again, are attached to the rings of the bit. When the horse is driving gently by the driving-ziein C, the rings G of the gag rein catch against the roller-rings I, and the gag-rein operates as a simple bearing-rein, being adjusted as to length to suit the animal, but when it becomes necessary to stop him by pulling upon the safety-rein, the eifect takes place on c'aeh side,
which is represented in the drawing, that is, the ring G is pulled back, doubling, and thereby shortening, the
portion H. This draws upon the portion J, which, being carried up and around thecheek-ring L, has the effect of drawing the bit forcibly against the angle of the lips and checking the horse.
It will be observed that considerable power is gained by the replication of the reins; the power on the safety-rein drawing upon G onlyretracts I to half the distance travelled by itself, and with twice the force, minus friction, of course. The same is true, in an additional degree, of the replicated strap J between the rings E L. As it there is threefold, the ring E only moves towards L one-third as fast as the roller-ring I is retracted, and the power is thereby greatly increased; thus what isgained by the doubling of II and trcbling of J, gives, minus the friction, six times the power upon the bit-rings E to draw them towards L that is exerted upon the safety-rein. If this full power is not desired, the safety-rein H may be connected directly to the ring G. This gives a power on the bit three times greater than that exerted 'on the safety-rein, and the power may betstill further decreased by connecting the end of the strap J to the ring L after it has passed once through the ring E, which will give aw power of two to one; and now, by doubling the power on H, by connecting the safety-rein to the ring G, as before, the power will be four to one, minus friction, of course, in all cases The gag-rein is thus made to perform its usual functions under ordinary circumstances, and becomes a part of the safety-rein in emergencies.
Having described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to se'cureby Letters Patent, is-a The arrangement of thc'safety-rein F and gag-rein II J with the rings E I L, operating as described and represented. i l
DANIEL 'M. DONEHOO.
