Description
tait@ tataatent @fitta YROBERT D.. STERLING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y
l Letters Patent No. 70,129, dated October 22, 1867.
IMPROVED JOINTBIT AND CHECK.
TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, ROBERT D. STERLING, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Joint-Bit and Check, and Ido hereby declare, that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingfand to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents the bridle complete attached on the horse.
Figure II is a front View of the bridle.
This invention consists in the arrangement of the check-reins, and the manner'of attaching the same to the hit, whereby greater control can be had over the horse, and it is almost impossible for the horse to hold the hit fast between his teeth.
In the accompanying drawings the crown-piece A, brow-band B, cheek-pieces C, and throat-hand D, are constructed in the usual manner similar to any common bridle. The mouth-piece E is made in three pieces, a, a, and t, jointed together, the parts a a haring-,the oheelorings m attached, to which the cheek-pieces C and the reins F are fastened. Onv the pieces a a of the bit, loose rings .I are placed, to'whioh reins nn are attached passing over the horses nose, and connected together by the ring e. To the upper end of this ring e the checks reins G are attached, passing overthe horscs head, through guides cl fast to the crown-piece A, and pass then on each side of the horscs neck, and arc, near the'cnd, joined together again and fastened there to the hook z' in the harness I-I. The rings J are placed perfectly loose on the hit or moutl1-pie0e E, inside ofthe oheek-rings'm, so that said mouth-piece may be operated through the reins F in the usual manner. Each ring has an ear or loop to which the rein and strap are attached instead of directly to the ring. By thisI device any working of the ring is prevented, and consequently there is no danger of hurting the sides 0f the horses mouth. When the check-reins G are used to control or manage the horse, the strain brought to bear on the mouth-piece E will cause the rings J to move nearer together, and at the same time slide on the outer joints a a towards the central joint I), causing thereby these joints to take a position, thus in the horses mouth, whereby a great power is obtained over the horse. It will be readily 4understood that these rings J and check-reins G may bc applied` to the hridoou-bit, port-mouthed bit, snalle-bit, or any other description of hit that may be desired.
What I claim as my invention,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' The straps 1i suspended from the top ring e, and connected to the'loop-ring J sliding ou the 'linked bit a, b o, constructedand operating as and for the purpose described.
