SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,705, dated August 13, 1889.

To all whom it 11mg concern.-
Be it known that I, AMOS F. GERALD, of Fairfield, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bits for Horses, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to a double bit, or, in other words, a bit which has a portion adapted for connection to a check or .to any part of the bridle, and another portion or other portions which are to be secured to the driving-reins.
I will describe a bit embodying my improvement, and then point out the novel features in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a bit embodying my improvement. .Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with certain parts shown in one position in bold outline. and in another position in dotted outline. Fig. 3 is atransverse section taken at the plane of the line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an end View.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a bar, which is shown as made trough-shaped throughout the middle portion a, as having the rear side of this portion left open, and as having ends bent upwardly and furnished with rings B. The barmay be of any suitable material, preferably metal. The rings B may be loosely connected, so as to be free to swing, and they maybe made of any suitable material-as, for instance, of the same material as the bar A. The rings B are shown as secured to straps C. These straps may be part of a check-ring or the cheek-straps of a bridle.
D D designate bars whose adjacentends are fitted Within the trough-shaped metal portion of the bar A and secured there by pivotpins (1 61- passing through them andthe bar A. may advantageously be made of metal. The outer extremities of these bars D D are shown as provided with rings E E These rings may advantageously be made wholly or partly of metal and are fitted loosely to the bars D D so as to be free to swing relatively to said bars.
These bars D D and their pivot-pins I have shown straps F F se--.
These straps are upon their pivots they will swing in the same plane as the opposite surfaces of the troughshaped portion of the bar A. Moreover they will be prevented from swinging forwardly beyond the front of the bar A.
It will be observed that the bars D D have rearward projections 61 (1*. When the outer ends of these bars D D are pulled rearwardly, the projections d 01 will be forced toward each other. The outer ends of the bars D D are shown as curved forwardly. Owing to this, when these ends of said bars are pulled rearwardly, the extremities will move in substantially parallel lines and will not be brought nearer together. This operation I have indicated by dotted lines o c in Fig. 2.
This bit is simple, cheap, and withal is very serviceable in subduing horses even of the most fractious disposition.
V What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bit, the combination of a bar having a trough-shaped middle portion, and the upwardly-turned ends provided with rings, and two other bars having their ends fitted in said trough-shaped portion and pivotally secured in place, substantially as specified.
2. In a bit, the combination of a bar, two other bars pivotally connected at the inner end thereto, provided with rearward projections between their inner and outer ends, and having their outer ends forwardly curved, substantially as specified.
3. In a bit, the combination of a bar A, having a trough-shaped middle portion, and the bars D D ,pivotally connected within the trough-shaped middle portion of the bar A, provided with projections 61 (Z and having their outer ends forwardly curved, substantially as specified.
