Be it known that I, ALLEN W. HELMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aylesworth, in the county of Fountain and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bl-idleBits; and I do declare the following to'be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable-others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to bits forhorses, and has for its object the provision of a bit which will be capable ofinflicting severe punishment on an animal when he becomes unruly, and which will lessen the labor incident to driving a fiery steed having a tough mouth.
The improvement consists in the novel features which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horses head, showing the application of my bit; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the bit, and Fig. 3 a cross section of the side bars on the line X X of Fig. 2.
The side bars, A,taper in cross-section from their outer to their inner edges,and have openings at each end to receive the rings B andB, respectively, and notches a in theirinner edges midway of their ends. The staples or keepers (J are secured to the side bars, and have the notches a located between them, as shown.
The mouth-bars D are secured at one end to check H between the headstall and the bit to the rings B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. Theherein-described bit, composed of the side bars having rings at each end and staples between their ends, and the mouth-bar comprising two separate bars, each connected at one end to one of the side bars, and having their other ends free and passed through the staples on the other side bars and provided with rings, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the side bars having their inner edges serrated and provided with staples, of the mouth-bar comprising two separate bars, having one end of each passed through the staples of one bar, and having its other end secured to the other side bar, substantially as shown.
