IMPROVE!) DEVICE FOB' HITGHlNG HOBSLIS.
'dite 521ml: referrer in 'ttesepittm neut linking part nf its sama TO'ALL wHoM 1in-MAY GONGERN:
, Be it known that I, SAMUEL GALBnAI-TH, of New Orleans, in the'parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have'invented a new andv improved Device for Hitching Horses; and 1 do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing forming par-t' of this specification, which drawing represents a perspective view of my inven`tion This invention is a neat, cheap, and durable device, designed to be attached to halters used in bitching horses, mules, dto., to prevent their being thrown,` hung,` or injured. j
In the drawing, A represents a ring, of metal or other suitable substance, which is to receive and hold oneV end of the halter, and represents another ring of the same size and similar material,to1which to attach another end of the halterV Intermediate between the rings A B are pivoted two double curved jaws G C, pivoted at c, and having their ends next to the ring B connected together by a rod, R, tothe centre of which the'ring B is hinged, as shown at h; The rod .R is an instrumentI composed of a central tube, t, in each end of which closely `iits and slides a short rod, 1*;.connected`with the end of the jaws C C. Between the in-ner ends of the rods fr 1', inside of the tube t, is a spring, s, operating against the rods rr. The jaws C C maybe made each to resemble in shape the letter s, and be crossed at c, in which case the spring s must be attached to the ends of the rods r r, and operate to draw them together, sons to lieepthe en'ds't" c of the jaws C C tightly closed; or the jaws may resemble the figure 3 in shape, being' pivoted as before, but not crossed, in -which'case the spring a must be made to push the rods apart, and thus close the ends c c firmly together. The springt` must be made of suiiicient rigidity and strength to keep the ends c c firmly clasped together, linless when operated upon by some extraordinary force, and in the-latter cas'e to yield, nnclasp the ends c e', and let the halter and ring A escape. The rods r r may be attached to the jaws C C, seas to 'form ajoint or hinge, as shown at iz'.
One of these devices is to be attached to the halter at-some point'nea-r'the horses head, the halter .being divided into two parts for that purpose, and this apparatus connecting the parts, one part being fastened by the ring A, and the other at the ring B; Another o f thesedevioes may be, in a similar manner, 'fixed to the halter or bridle at the throat-latch; and still another may be fixed to the head-stall. If three are thus used, one at the forehead, another under the throat, and the other forming part of the halter-strap, which is u sedto fasten the horse, it will be impossible for the animal ever to be in any way injured by reason of twisting the halter, i catching his foot in it, or by any ot' the accidents that destroy so many fine horses in consequence 'of tying them with haiters or ropes. The apparatus is so simple and cheap that everyowner of a horse or mule can r provide himself with it, and thus eifect'ually insure his stock against a very dangerous hazard.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, ,and desire t'o secure by Letters-Patent, is The device above described, consisting of the rings A and B, and the pivoted curved jaws C C, meeting at j one extremity at c c', and connected at the other by means ofthe rods fr, and springs, working in thetube t, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
To the above specification of my invention I have signed my hand, this Sdday of October, 1867. f sAML ,GALBRAITIL Witnesses:
