Belt known that I, JosErH SUTTON, a citi- Zen' of Canada, residing at Medora, 1n the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in .Hitching Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to halters, and it has for its object to produce what is known as a halter shank or hitching device of simple, effective and very durable construction, said shankor hitching device being detachably connected with a halter forthe'purpose of hitching or leading the animal to which the halter is applied.

A further object of the invention is to produce a halter shank including a snap hook and other metallic fittings which may be used indefinitely While the more perishable parts of the device may be convenientlyreplaced or renewed when necessary.

lVith these and other ends in view which avill readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred formof the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and-modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

A metallic head 15 which may be approximately semi-spherical of neatly tapered shape is provided at its crown or apex with lugs 16 between which a snap hook 17 is pivot-ally supported on a pin or pivot member 18. The head 15 has a neck or shank 19 that extends downwardly from the base thereof, said shank being connected with the head for swiveling movement by means of a Specificationof Letters Extent. however, tapered downwardly at its lower aboutmidway between the upper and lower ends of the socket member. The external diameter of the socket'member at the upper end thereof is equal tothe diameter of the head member at'the base thereof, and the ;reduced portion 20 ofthe head member is adapted to fit snugly in the upper extremity of the relatively large portion 23 of the axial bore of the socketmember;

j A piece or strip of leather 26 is provided about which one end of a strip of raw hide 27.1srfolded and secured by several rows of stitching 28, after which the ends of the hide covered strip of leather are brought to gether, as indicated at 29, and secured by stitching 30. The strip of raw hide with which the leather strip 26 is in this manner associated is of'considerable length, and the side edges thereof'are brought together, one

edge overlapping the other, and secured together by stitching 31 thus forming a tubular body in which is placed a core consisting of a rope32 which extends through the greater portion of the length thereof, the lower extremity receiving a plug 38 of wood or other suitable material, said lower extremity being also surrounded by a metallic ferrule 33%, the latter being assembled with the plug and withthe intermediate portion of the raw hide by a fastening member, screw or rivet 35.

That portion of the raw hide casing which contains the core 32 is drawn through the bore of the socket member until that portion which contains the leather filler 26 rests on the shoulder or offset 25, it being evident that said leather filler materially increases the diameter of the tubular device or casing formed of the raw hide strip. The head member 15 is now placed in position on the socket member 22, the shank 19 being interposed into the upper portion of the tubular raw hide casing, the parts being finally assembled together by means of screws, rivets or other fastening members extending transversely through the socket member, as indicated at 3%, the tubular raw hide casing and the shank 19, one of said fastening members extending also through the leather filling 26.

In a device of the class described, a socket having an axial bore, a flexible tubular casing connected with the bore of the socket, a head having an axial bore, a shank engaging the upper end of the tubular casing and secured therein, said shank having a socket at its upper end, a pivot member extending axially through the head and secured in the socket of the shank with which the head is thus connected for swiveling movement, assembling members extending transversely through the socket member, the tubular casing and the shank, and a snap hook pivotally connected with the head.

In a device of the class described, a socket having an axial bore formed with an intermediate oflset, a flexible tubular casing having an enlarged upper portion seated on saidoffset, a head mounted on the socket member and having a shank engaging the upper end of the tubular casing, assembling member extending transversely through the socket member, the tubular casing and the shank, and a snap hook pivotally associated with the head, said flexible tubular casing having a filling plug at its lower end, an external ferrule, a fastening member extending transversely through the ferrule and the plug, and a flexible filler extending through the casing between the plug and the shank.

In a device of the class described, a flexible tubular casing consisting of an elongated strip of raw hide having its edges secured together, in combination With a leather filler secured in folds at one end of the strip to produce a portion of enlarged external diameter; a socket member having an axial bore provided With an offset affording a seat for the enlarged portion of the tubular casing, a head member carrying a snap hook and having a shank engaging the upper end of the tubular casing; and assembling means.

In a device of the class described, a flexible tubular casing consisting of an elongated strip of raw hidehaving its edges secured together, in combination with a leather filler secured in folds at one end of the strip to produce a portion of enlarged external diameter; a socket member having an axial bore provided with an offset affording a seat for the enlarged portion of the tubular casing, a head member carrying a snap hook and having a shank engaging the upper end of the tubular casing, and assembling means; said tubular casing being provided with a flexible filler extending through the greater portion thereof.
