HAT-RETAINER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. CARTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riegelsville, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Retainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a retaining device or catch adapted to be fastened within the crown of a hat for receiving the end of a hat pin so that the latter will not have to penetrate the crown of the hat in fastening the latter on the head of the wearer.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide an extremely simple, durable and effective device of this character which can be readily applied to any hat so that the end of the hat pin can be securely gripped after the pin has been passed through the hair to secure the hat in place.
With these objects in View and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a hat showing the hat pin and retaining de vice therein. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hat partly broken away showing the invention applied. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pin-retaining device or catch. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the device.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a hat of ordinary construction which has its crown provided at one side with an eyelet 2 and extending through this eyelet is a shank 3 of a hat pin B which is provided with a head 4 on its outer end and a ball 5 on its inner end, the ball being threaded on the shank of the pin so as to facilitate the placing of the pin in the hat. Fastened within the crown of the hat at the side opposite from the opening 2 is a catch or retaining device G into which the enlargement 5 is adapted to enter after the pin has been passed through the hair in the act of securing the hat on the head. This device C may be made of any suitable material and consists of an elongated body 6 which has a Specification of Letters Patent.

longitudinal mouth 7, the edges of the mouth being provided with yielding lips 8 that are normally in cont-act so as to close the mouth, the said lips being made of rubber or other suitable material. The body 6, which is hollow, permits the enlarged end or ball of the pin to enter between the yielding lips 8 so that the lips will close behind the ball and effectively retain the inner end of the pin in proper position. By making the device C of considerable length, it is easy to enter the inner end of the pin in the catch or retainer and furthermore two or more pins can be gripped by the same retainer. The device C can be secured in position in any suitable manner, as for instance, by means of eyelet rivets 9 that are passed through the side of the crown of the hat.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is
In a hat retaining device, a hat pin having a ball on the inner end thereof, a member having a longitudinal slot at one side and integral attaching lugs at the opposite side for securing the member to the crown of the hat, and strips extending longitudinally of the member from one end of the slot to the other and of triangular cross section, the edges of the strips meeting at the center of the slot of the member to form yielding lips for gripping the end of said hat pin.
