Description

J. E. CURTIS. Whip.
No. 221,724. Patented Nov. 18, I879.
'Wicnesses repiwr N PETERS. PHUTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
JULIUS CURTIS, OF UKIAH, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIPS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 221,724, dated November 18, 1879; application filed April 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS E. (loans, of Ukiah, county of Mendocino, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Securing Whip-Lashes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof.
My invention relates to an improved means for securing lashes to whips, by which they are not only held firmly to the stock but are prevented from'cuttin g or wearing out by rubbing and friction at the point where they join the stock.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is an exterior view of my device. Fig. 2 is a view of the parts separated.
A is the stock or handle of a whip. The
lash is usually secured to a loop or thong, B,
of buckskin or other suitable material, and in any ordinary method of securing it to the stock it is subject to abrasion and a speedy wearing out by its constant movement about the end of the stock.
My invention is designed to provide a simple method of securing the loop to the stock, and at the same time to prevent its becoming worn by constant use and motion.
0 is a cylindrical or tapering metallic sleeve, having a hole made through its center longitudinally. The lower end of this sleeve is made with a slightly-enlarging taper, and has interior screw-threads out in it, so that it can be screwed upon the end of the stock.
The upper part of the opening is made perfectly smooth, and terminates at the outer end with a flaring or bell mouth, D, as shown.
The whip-stock has its upper end fitted to receive the sleeve 0, either by having a metallic tip with screw-threads to receive the sleeve, or it may be fitted in any other suitable manner. From the end of the stock a book, 6, projects into the sleeve when the latter is in place, and the ends of the loop or thong are pierced to receive this hook.
It will readily be seen that by drawing the loop or thong into the sleeve and passing the book through it, and then screwing the sleeve upon the end of the stock, the loop will be firmly secured in place.
The end of the sleeve projects a considerable distance beyond the end of the stock, so that the portions of the loop inclosed within this part are free to move loosely about, and the bell-shaped end prevents friction and wear upon the lash.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The stock A, provided at its end with the book 6, to engage in the loop B, in combination with the inclosing-sleeve C, fitted to the end of the stock, substantially as described.
2. A ferrule or sleeve, C, provided with a flaring mouth, D, in combination with the flexible loop B, stock A, and a retaining device, e, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JULIUS E. CURTIS.
