Description

@wird stuurt @tutti @titille JERS Letters Patent No. 90,196, dated May 18, 1869.
IMPROVED FASTENING FOR HORSES.
, The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be' it known that we,PHrLn 1 n Rroonn and Joux lt'. SeATTuReoo1 ,of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New .l ersey, have invented a new and useful mechanical device wherewith a horse or other animal may be fastened to a post or other fixed object, possessing the advantage that its construction is suchthat the driver may, with ease, instantly unf'asten his horse from the post after he has mounted his carriage; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oi' the construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, representing our-device attached to an ordinary rein, and the rein fastened thereby to a post. The rein may also, with equal facility, be fastened to a tree, ring, attached to a post, rail, bar, or other convenient object.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section. i
A represents curved metallic clasp, terminating in bolt B, and articulating, by joint O, with curved end of retraction-bar D.
E represents metallic socket, furnished, at one end, with a screw, E, for uniting it with spring-barrel, or socket, G.
H, spiral spring, contained within spring-barrel-G, acting through retraction bar Dand clasp A, upon bolt B, causing it, when adjusted, to be drawninto and retained within ferrule E.
I, ring passing through hole J, in rounded end of spring-barrel G, for the purpose of attaching the apparatus to the rein, K. v
Figure 3 represents the driver, about to uni'asten his horse, showing the appearance of the rein before unfastening.
The operation of the apparatus may be described essentially as follows;
When it is desired to tie, draw a sufficient portion oi' the rein, along with the metallic' fastener, forward through all of' the harness-rings, allowing the reins, which may be buckled together, to fall, in the usual manner,'bohind the dash-board. Ihen form a simple loop of the rein, which is to be passed around the post, as shown in iig. l. Next embrace within the clasp the loop and that portion of the rein proceeding tothe horse, at the same time pulling upon the rein or the spring-barrel G, iig. 2, and thus bringing out the retraction-bar D, so that the clasp A may be closed, when the holt B will be drawn into and retained withinthe ferrule E, by the action of theslining H, thus fastening the rein to the post or other fixed object.
Io uniasten, it is only necessary for the driver to make tract-ion upon the rein from his scat.
Having fully described our invention,
\Vhat we claim to be new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. rlhe spring-catch, or snap, oonsisting'of metallic clasp A, bolt retracting-bar l), sockets E and G, springr H', and ring I, constructed as described, and i'or the purpose of enabling the releaselncnt of a drivingrein, or its equivalent, b va simple pull on the part of' the driver, after having mounted his carriage.
2. The eombinationoi' said snap with a driving-rein, halter, or its equivalent, and the peculiar manner of attaching the same to a post, tree, or other suitable object, without the use of iixed rings or hooks, whereby the strain of the animal tied, when pulling, comes directlyon said post, and not on the snap, substantially as described.
PHILIPPE ltICOltD.
J OHN It. SCA'ITERGOOI).
