UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcn SAMUEL BIBDSALL, OF SUSQUEHANNA, PENNSYLVANIA.
-HlTCHlNG-STRAP-.
$PEGIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,561, dated June 17, 1884.
Application filed April 24, 1884.
To [all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BIRDSALL, of Susquehanna, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hitching-Straps, of which the following is a full, clear, and er; act description.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improvement, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a sectional end View taken through the line (i? :c, Fig. 2.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience and security in the use of hitching-straps for horses.
The invention consists in a hitching-strap constructed with a brace-strap connected with the tie-strap by a bolt, nut, and washer, or other suitable coupling, so that the said bracestrap will be firmly connected with the said tie-strap, and can be readily swung to either side, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A is the neck-strap, which is provided at one end with a ring, B, and at its other end with a snap-hook, 0, so that it can be easily and quickly applied to and removed from a horses neck.
To the neck -strap A, at a little distance from one end, is attached a ring, D, to which is secured one end of the strap E.
To the tie-strap E, at such a distance from its upper end as to be about upon alevel with the bit of the headstall, is secured, by a bolt,
' F, nut G, and washer H, or other suitable coupling, the end of the brace-strap I, which 40 can be made of leather or other suitable mate- (No model.)
Upon the bolt F, at a distance from its head about equal to the thickness of the two straps E I, is formed a shoulder, F, against which the washer His held by the nut G, so that the nut G cannot be screwed up so tightly as to pinch the straps E I and prevent them from working freely upon each other and upon the bolt F.
To the free end of the strap I is attached a snap-hook, J, so'that the said strap can be easily and quickly connected with the bitring and detached therefrom. "With this construction the brace strap I can be readily swung into proper position to be applied to the bit-ring from whichever side of the horse the hitching-strap may be applied.
In using the hitching-strap, the neck-strap A is passed around the horses neck and the snap-hook G is sprung into the ring 13. The brace-strap I is then swung into proper position, and the snap-hook J is sprung into the bit-ring of the headstall, and the free end of the tie-strap E is secured to the hitching-post.
To release the horse, the tie-strap E is detached from the hitching-post, and the snaphooks J G are disengaged from their rings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a hitching strap, the combination, with the tie-strap E and the brace-strap I, of a headed bolt and a nut for clamping the said brace-strap to the tie-strap, substantially as setforth.
2. In a hitching strap, the combination, with the tie-strap E and the brace-strap I, of the bolt F, having shoulder F, and' the nut and washer G H, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said brace-strap will be firmly connected with the tie-strap, and can be readily swung to either side, as set forth.
, SAMUEL BIRDSALL.
