HERMAN BEIIMER ANDL CHARLES H. S. SGHULTZ, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Laim Patat.: No. 67,016, ma July 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT 4Ill DG-MIZZLE.
TO ALL WOM IT MAY CQNCERN:
Beit known that we, HERMAN BnLMmt and CHARLES H. S. SoHULTz, both of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Dog-Muzzle; and we do hereby declare the following to be' a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part of this specification.
The wire dog-muzzle, as heretofore constructed, has a definite and unchangeable shape; hence a muzzle of givendimensions and shape can only be applied to an animal having a corresponding head. The object of our invention is to so construct the muzzle as to adaptjt For more general application, that is to say, to render each'muzlzle applicable to heads of different size and shape. In constructing a muzzle upon our improved plan the encircling or stiiening-Wires are confined to that portion which envelops the nose, and serve to form a rigid cage, from which the longitudinal wires project rearwisc so as to reach theneck, and to the extremities of these projecting wires We attach a strap or other flexible connection, ivhich, while it affords a means for securing the muzzle upon the head, enables the adjustment of the wires so as to properly t the size of the bead; and the longitudinal wires, being free at the rear end, and exible thence to their point of juncture with the encircling portion of the wire, are adapted to be bent to conform to the contour of the head, which,l in the diierent breeds, varies to a considerable extent.
The drawing is an elevation of our improved muzzle as applied to the head of a terrier. A are the longitudinal wires of the muzzle and B the coiled or helical portion, the former beingmade fast tothe latter by twining 'finer Wire aboutthe points of intersection or by any other desired means. The wires A, being extended backward suciently to accommodate the largest heads, are bent forward and made fast at the extremity, so as to form loops, as shown at a. These loops confine the strap C, which is buckled upon the dogs neck, and serves to secure the muzzle upon thehead, as represented.- It will be observed that by leaving the Wires A free of any rigid connection at the rear, they may, in the act of applying the muzzle, be drawn together by meansof strap C, so'as to snugly embrace the head, whether large or small; and this connection also enables them to b e bent so as to conform to the'shape or contour of the skull, cheeks, and throat. The formation of the loops a a'ords a ready and very simple means for attaching the strap C, -and the addition-al thickness of the wire at these parts insures stidness and rigidity beyond the point where the bracing helical portion terminates1 We do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise details herein set forth, as the principle of our invention is susceptible of application'under other forms.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An adjustable dog-muzzle, constructed substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination in a dog-muzzle of the flexible wires A and strap or collar C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The provision in a dog-muzzle' of Iloops a, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention we hereunto set our hands.
HERMAN BELMER, CHAS. H. S. SCHULTZ.
