TO 4A'IIivWliOll/I'IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, L; DrWOODMANSEE, of Dayton, inv Montgomery county, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement invLin'es to Drive or' Guide Horses, and to stop runaway horses; and I do hereby declare that the following is' a fll and exact description thereof', referene'eibeing had to the accoipn` panying drawings, and to 'the'letters'of reference markedthereon. v 1
Figure 1' represents my improved lines attached tovmy patented bridle-hit. Figure @represents my lines as applied to use upon a pair of horses. i o i nThe object of my invention is to construct lines for managing horses, in such a manner as to enable a person to perfectly control restive or runaway horses with promptness, ease, and certainty, and to manage eithel.' of the horses o f a span, and regulate his speed and gait, without aii`ecting the gait of the other.
` The outside lines, au, do notdier in their construction from those in general use. But the check-lines b b, instead of being connected midway ofthe length ot' the'outside lines, are made to extend through theloo'ps c c, which aro fastened to the outside lines, so as to form the loops d 0l, where the driver can conveniently grasp 'them with his hands. 'The two outside lines are made longer than the checks b b, so that the lines may be used for ordinary occasions. 1, l y l To use my improved lines most eectively, I employwith them my patented bridle-bit, A, which has the bars'e e, to which thevlines are buckled, extending-downwards and rearwards across the under jaw of the horse. To cheek and stop a span of runaway horses, the driver will pull the cheek-lines bl, at the same time keeping the outsidelinetaut, which will turn the horses heads inwards towards eah other, as-represented in the drawngs'in iig. 2; and their heads being brought ,into that position allows4 the driver suliicient advantage and purchase to draw the under jaw ofthe animalflaterally, and to cramp the jaw and neck so as to force him' toyield tothe control of the driver. The effect of thus pullingr the jawof a horse laterally, when the neck is bent and 'slightly twisted, willbe tooompletelylenervate the animal and relax his power of resistance, so that he may be easily controlled. ,Y f i Y i o 4When the lines and bit are used for stopping runaway horses, theirv h'eads are turned inwards, as before stated, and the' mouth-'pierce and-bar eV form an acute angle, s o as to clamp the side of the animals jaw at the' point indicated-by the letter iv, bit is designed to guide horses, as described in my patent dated January. 1,- 1867, and serves `e`ectually for the purpose design'ed, and is, therefore, best adapted to be used with'my `improved lines, because the bit will not pull through the mouth, and will so operate upon the mouthas to enable` the'horseman to .easily turn the animals head in eithendirection.
It is apparent, from the foregoing description, that these double lines will enable a. person to govern and `regulate the distance apartat which 'a spanoi'v horsesmay travel, and to vary that `distance continually by simplyhandling the lines agreeably to the purpose proposed; and either one ofthe horses may be lchecked and. thro-wn back to his gait, whenever jhe breakaA-without disturbing or jostling the other horse in his gait. This -is a very'important advantage in handling a team, especially when trotting for sp'eed. N i
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1'. The check-lines?) b, extending rearward, and forming loops, d d, fr the hands of the driver, in combi nation with theglincs a a, in the manner and for the purpose described. Y
2. ".lhelines ct and I1, constructed-and connected Vin the manner described, in combination with the bit A, for thefpurpose described. Y i' 1 v Iny testimonygwhereoi, I haveV hereunto set my hand, this 18th dayvoi` January, 1868.
