IMPROVEMENT m RElN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,936, dated J annary 19, 1875; application filed November 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN R. HAMIL- TON, of South Deerfield, Franklin county,
, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rein-Holders, of which 7 the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a top View of the reins with the holder attached, and Fig. 2is a section of the same, taken on the line a: 00.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A are the reins. The ends B B extend to the horse, and O O are the loose ends or parts handled by the driver or rider. D is the holder-tube, which may be made of wood, metal, vulcanized rubber, or of any suitable This tube is flat and tapering, and the reins pass through it, as seen in Fig. 2. E represents the wedge, which is cross-grooved or serrated on its sides, and corresponds in width with the width of the inside of the tube. F is a mortise, made widthwise through the wedge, and G is a pin through the tube, which passes through themortise in the wedge. This arrangement holds the wedge and the tube together, and allows a longitudinal movement of the wedge sufficient to wedge and eflectually With this adjustable holder the rider or driver of an unruly horse may obtain complete control over the animal, when he would be nearly powerless with the simple reins in his hands.
The wedge is loosened by holding the holder firmly in one hand, and with the other laying hold of the reins in the rear of the holder and pulling back on them. After the Wedge isloosened, take hold of the reins in front of the holder, and hold of the wedge with the thumb and finger of the other hand, and pull the whole back, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- The combination of a handled wedge, E, having slot F, and the cross-pin G, with the tapered tube D, as shown and described.
BENJAMIN R. HAMILTON.
