SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,481, dated July 13, 1897.

Application filed ch 13, 1397- To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LoUIs ERSELIUS, a subject of the King of Saxony, and a resident of Leipsic, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Saddles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The present invention consists of an improved device for fastening the shabrack or horse-cloth to the saddle, and thus preventing the same from slipping and getting displaced, while at the same time an air-space is provided between the cloth and the back of the horse, along the backbone of the latter; and in order to render the present specification more easilyintelligible reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.

Figure l is a longitudinal section through the saddle, showing the bar for attaching the saddle-cloth fastened in position; Fig. 2, a similar section showing the bar released or unfastened; Fig. 3, a view of the saddle seen from underneath; Fig. at, a section on the line P P of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a longitudinal section through the saddle and horse-cloth attached thereto, and Fig. 6 a cross-section on the line K K of Fig. 5.

At the rear end of the saddletree is pivoted a bar or strap B, which passes longitudinally along the saddletree and is secured at its forward end thereto by means of a screw, as shown in the drawings, or by means of a spring-catch of any ordinary well-known c011- struction. The saddle-cloth is perforated or cut out at the rear end to allow the bar or Serial No. 627,419. (No model.)

strap B to pass through the same and is also provided with a similar perforation or recess at the forward end through which the screw or spring-catch may pass.

From the, foregoing description it will be seen that the saddle-cloth will be attached to the saddle by means of the bar or strap B and will be kept off the back of the horse at this point along the whole saddle, so that a space S will be left along the backbone, and air can circulate freely through the same.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a saddle and saddle dle-cloth between said bar and the saddle in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
