Description

G. H. HESS. Rein Holder.
No.202,029. Patented April 2, i878 WITNEEEEE- W kw N,FETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHEH, WASHXNGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. HESS, 'OF WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA.
' IMPROVEMENT N RElN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,029, dated April 2, 1878; application filed February 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, GEORGE H HESS, of Winchester, in the county of Frederick and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bein-Holders and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in holders for driving-reins; and it consists in a soft-padded button, which has a hole through it for the rein to pass through, and is provided with a buckle on its back to hold it in any desired position, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of a slightlymodified form of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of the buckle I propose to use.
(t represents an oval-shaped piece of heavy leather, or other suitable material, which is provided with the padding 0 on its face, so as to make it easy and pleasant for the hands. Through this piece of. leather and the padding on its face, at a suitable distance above their center, is made a hole, 01, through which the driving-rein 0 passes, as shown.
To the back of the piece ais fastened a common clamping-buckle, g, by means of the strip of leather i, as shown in Fig. 1. The rein passes through the two parts a I) up between the top edge of tongue and the top of the frame, then down over the tongue, and out through the lower part of the frame.
If preferred, the whole lower part of the frame of the buckle may be dispensed with, and a small leather loop or band, h, be fastened to the lower part of the rear side of the part a, as shown in Fig. 2, down under which the rein will pass.
The advantages of my invention are, that no holes have to be made through the reins; the
holder is very light; can be instantly adj usted' I am aware thata metal frame made in two parts and covered with leather, and which parts can be closed forward, so as to release the rein, and open backward, so as to clamp it in position, is not new.
My holder is formed wholl y of leather, with the exception of the buckle, and can thus be manufactured by any saddler, and, when once placed in position upon the rein, remains there until it is desired to move it. Dispensing with all iron except the buckle, no castings are necessary, and the holders are made so light that they do not weigh down the reins when released from the hand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A holder for driving-reins, consisting of the piece a and padding 0, having the rein-hole d, in combination with a clamping-buckle, g, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of February, 1878.
GEORGE H. HESS.
