Description
A. P. MASON, OF GOWANDA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ZALMON I-IANFORD, OF SAME PLACE.
'Leners Patent N0.91,463,vzated June 15,1869.
IMPROVBD BRIDLEQBIT.
The Schedule-referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, A. P. MASON, of Gowanda, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridle-Bits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which the figure is a transverse section.
This invention consists in making a bit for horses, with, onerlongitudinal half angular in cross-section,
'and the other, longitudinal, half round in cross-section,
and in providing said ling with a double ring at each end for the attachment of the reins, either to one ring or the other, according as it is desired that the angular or round side of the bit should be uppermost in the horses mouth.
To enable those skilled in the art to make `and use my invention,I now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Similar letters in the drawings refer to like parts.
In the drawing- A represents a straight iron bit of the usual dimensions, and made with one longitudinal half, a, angular in cross-section, as shown, so as to present a straight, sharp edge, a', at vthe junction of the two inclined sides. The remainder of the bit is round, in crosssection, or`semicy1indricaL In the eye, at each end of the bit, is secured a double ring, B, the two parts b b' of the same being rigidly joined together, so that if their positions are reversed the position of the bit may also be reversed; that is to say, so that the angular side of the bit may be uppermost, instead of the round side, or vice versa.
The rings B are for the attachment of the reins, either to the parts b or b', according as it is desired that tbe angular or round side should be uppermost.
It isv easier for the borse to have the round side uppermost; but if, with the 'bit thus, he carries his tongue over it, Aor lugs on the check-rein, these faults may be cured by shifting the reins to the ring b, which will turn the side a ofthe bit up.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bit A, provided with one round and one angular side, with the double rings B, as and for the purpose described.
. A. P. MASON.
vllVitnesses:
WILLIAM A. FISH, M. DAVIS.
