Description

ROBERT PORTER, `OFOTTUMWA, IOWA.
Letters Patent, No. 109,93?, dated December 6, 18:70.
lIMPROVEMENT IN HALTERS.
The, Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, ROBERT PORTER, of Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Halters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference Vbeing had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification,
lhe nature of' my invention consists in the coustruction and arrangement of the castings for connecting the different straps of a halter, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Irigurc l is a side view 0f a halter, with my castings connecting the different parts Figure 2 is a View showing the manner of attaching the throat-latch and cheek-strap to the casting when a snap-hook is used to attach the head-stall;
Figure 3 is a view of the modication of the casting shown in fig. 2; and
I Figure 4v is an edge View ot' fig. 2.
A represents the cheek-strap, and
l the nose-strap, of a halter.
The ends of these straps are passed through accasting, O, of' T-shaped form, as shown in iig. 1, and fastened by one rivet, which also passes through the body of thc casting.
'lhc arms ofthe T-shaped casting O are slotted, as shown, forming narrow cross-bars, over and under which the straps A and'B are passed before being fastened by the single rivet, thus, in a great measure, relieving the rivet i'rom any strain.
To the remaining arm of the T-shaped casting is buckled the jaw-strap D, which passes under the jaw ofthe horse; andthe bitching-strap Eisalso buckled in a slot in the center of the casting opposite the cen..- tral arm,v as shown. v
The upper end of the cheek-strap A and the end of the throat-latch G are inserted in the same manner over and under cross-bar in a casting, H, formed, as shown in figs. 1 and 2, in the shape of a segment, to allow for the different direction in which said straps run. The endsl of these straps are also fastened by one rivet passing through the body of the casting.
To the endot' the casting H the neck-strap I is buckled.
This neck-strap or head-stall may be attached to the casting by means of a snap-hook, J, in which case\ the cheek-strap A is extended beyond th end` of the casting and there turned over, forming aloop in which the snap-hook is inserted and fastened by another rivet, as shown in figs. 2 and 4.
In place of the casting H, made in thesegmenta form above described, I may use thecasting H, shown in fig. 3, for the same purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention,
YVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f The slotted castings 0H, and H', constructed as described, and used for connecting the different straps of a hal-ter, 'substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of April, 1870. y
ROBERT PORTER.
