IMPROVEMENT IN' BRDLE-BIT.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and making parl: of 'the' same.

To all who/ml it may concern Be it known that I, A. P. BALDWIX, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex, and Stateof New J ersey, have invented certain improvements in Bridle- Bits and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had herein to the drawings that accompany this specication, makingpart of the. same.

llhe nature of' my improvement consists in combining an upper and lower mouth-piece in such a manner that the one can vibrate endwise upon or in the other, while together they form but on'e mouthpiece, the upper piece moving while the lower is stationary,

Figure 2 shows the form of the upper piece.

An endwise section is shown at A.

The lower piece b is pivoted to the ,end of the sides O, or cheek-pieces of the bit, and a groove, e, is formed the entire length.

The ends of the upper piece, fig. 2, are turned up,

v so as to place the pivots by which it is attached, at a distance above the pivots of the lower piece b, to susi pend' the upper piece a just the distance labove the lower piece b, that, as the cheeks C shall be moved either way from being at right angles with the mouthpiece, the traversing of the piece a will' bring itdown in or on to the piece b, and be a stop thereto at the proposed inclination of the cheeks.

The object of the improvement is to retain control of vicious horses, that will get the bit between their teeth, by appealing to their feelings in a sidewise cramp of their jaws, which will compel attention thereto.

I do 4not claim broadly a double mouth-piece.

What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is#- Pivoting the two'mouth-pieces, a and b, to the cheekpieces C, the pivots of the one being at a distance from the other greater than that of the mouth-pieces, substantially as described and shown.
