Description

- [NVENTOR @Qnivqn Patented May '10, 1910.
THOMAS J. CANIVAN, OF HONESDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHIMNEY PROTECTOR OR SHIELD.
esteem To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. GANIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Honesdale, in the county of Wayne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney Protectors or Shields; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in chimney protectors or shields and my object is to provide a device of this class which will prevent the destruction of the chimney from exposure to the weather;
A further object is to provide means for preventing rain, snow, or the like, from dripping onto the sides of the chimney and a further object is to provide means for securing the protector in position on the chimney.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, Figure l is a perspective view of the upper end of the chimney, showing my improved protector attached thereto, and Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view therethrough.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a chimney, which may be constructed in the usual or any preferred manner and of any suit-able material, preferably brick, and it has been found by experience that the upper portions of the chimney or that portion exposed to the inclemencies of the weather, will crumble and become destroyed and in order to overcome this objectionable feature and at the same time provide a more or less ornamental structure for the upper end of the chimney, I provide my improved protector, which comprises a shield or covering 2, the central portion of the shield being provided with an opening 3 to correspond with the opening in the chimney. In order to cause the rain, etc., to readily pass from the shield, the horizontal portion thereof is inclined from the opening outwardly, the edges of said shield terminating Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 24, 1909.
Patented May 10, 1910.
Serial No. 504,092.
in a depending flange 4:, which flange extends at a distance from the face of the chimney, thereby preventing water from descending onto the Walls of the chimney when leaving the flange.
A depending socket 5 is attached to the shield 2, the upper edge of the socket having a lateral extension 6 adapted to fit against the lower face of the shield and the socket is attached to the shield by introducing rivets or the like through the lateral extension and the shield. The socket 5 is so arranged as to rest adjacent the walls of the chimney a sufficient space being left between the socket and chimney for the introduction of any suitable form of plastic material 8. Similar plastic material 9 is introduced be tween the upper end of the chimney and the shield, said plastic material forming a seal between the chimney and shield, thus preventing water or the like from passing between the shield and chimney, which would result in the destruction of the chimney or shield from freezing and the plastic material further serves to hold the shield in position on the chimney.
The shield and socket are preferably constructed of copper, galvanized iron or similar metal and thereby producing a device which is non-destructible from rust, etc, and it will further be seen that after the shield has been properly positioned upon the chimney, the parts of the chimney so surrounded will be fully protected from the inclemencies of the weather. It will likewise be seen that by introducing the plastic material between the chimney and the shield, when said plastic material becomes hardened, the shield will be held against casual removal and likewise, by inclining the shield, said shield will be thoroughly drained and the drainage carried a distance from the outer face of the chimney.
What I claim is:
A device of the character described, comprising a cap member proper and an inner socket member, the former having a central opening therethrough and inclined downwardly and outwardly around said opening and extending beyond the surface of the object to which it may be applied, said cap proper having a depending flange at its outer edge, said socket depending from the underside of said cap andhaving its upper name to this specification in the presence of end extended laterally and secured thereto, two subscribing Witnesses.
said socket member dependin some distance v beyond the flange of said ca p member and THOMAS CANIVAN' 5 adapted to encompass the chimney upon its Witnesses:
exterior. W. L. LENNISTZER,
In testimony whereof I have signed my F. H. ORAGO.
