lMPRQVEMENT IN MGNUMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.1 ,245, dated March 3, 1874; application filed August 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILO A. RICHARDSON,
of Paterson, in. the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tombstones; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. Figure l of the drawings is a representation of my tombstone in front elevation. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section of a part thereof, showing the joint.
My invention relates to such monuments or tombstones as are made of metal; and it consists in making them of cast metal in two vertical sections, and each section provided on one edge with an overlapping joint or projection when put together, forming a hollow monument, and provided with interior tablets of glass or porcelain for pictures and inscriptions. It also consists in the interior devices for bolding and protecting said tablets, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Like letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A and B represent the two parts or vertical sections, with overlapping projections a, of my improved monument or tombstone, each part being cast separate of zinc, iron, or' other suit able metal. If made of iron it should be galvanized. These two sectional parts are made with the overlapping strips a cast therewith, so as to form, when put together, the weatherjoint a, as shown in Fig. 3, all around the edge of the monument. They are then fastened together by one or more bolts, b, making the monument or tombstone hollow, as shown in Fig. 2. In both parts A and B are made suitable openings for tablets O C, which may be made of glass or porcelain, and have pictures, inscriptions, or mottoes painted or otherwise affixed to them. These tablets are applied on the inside of the monument and seen through the openings in the metal, and as lightis trans= mitted from one to the otherit adds materially to the effect of the different colors used on the tablets. The tablets O G are held on the inside of the monument against the metal by suitable supports (1 d, which I propose to make yielding, thereby lessening the liability of any accidents to the tablets from the accumulation of ice or snow at the union of the tablets and the body-part of the monument. Over the top of each tablet I arrange an overlappin g shield or trough, h, as shown in Fig. 2, to carry over any accumulations of dust and water down the back or inner side of the tablets that would otherwise pass down the front and deface the tablets.
The tablets, especially those having the pictures, are to be covered by a swinging cover, D.
The monument or tombstone thus constructed is held in the ground by means of suitable anchors G G, which are hooked into the base of the monument.
A pattern of the parts A or B thus made, with an overlapping strip on one edge only, extending from the base to the top, will serve a twofold purposeviz., to cast tomb-markers having right and left sides.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a monument or tomb-marker, the vertical sectional parts A B, having the overlapping strips a, forming, when put together, a weather-joint and hollow monument, substan tially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the monument A B and tablets O C, the supports (1, and shield or trough 71 constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MILO A. RICHARDSON alofir'fw'. BERRY,
R. L. RICHARDSON.
