UNTTED STATES PATENT ormoia HERBERT E. PERCIVAL, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BREXVER TV. KEY, OF VVOODVVARD, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
RAlL-FASTENING FOR PLASTIC TIES AND THE PROCESS OF MAKING THE SAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
Application filed April 20,1905. Serial No. Z56,656.
Be it known that I, HERBERT E. PERCIVAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rail-Fastenings for Flas-- tic Ties and the Process of Making the Same, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
My invention relates to an improvement in rail-fastenings for plastic ties and the process of making the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a form of rail-fastening which Will be tight and secure and not shake loose and which may be easily tightened or loosened or removed from the rail as occasion demands.
My invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings forming a part of this specication, wherein- Figure l shows a rail and tie provided with my improved mode of fast-ening, the View being mainly in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the plastic tie; B, the rail. Between the rail and the tie is placed a cushion of WOOdG or other suitable material protected by a fianged plate D, on which the rail rests.
The rail is fastened by means of a screw spike or bolt E, the fianged head e of which is adapted to engage the fiange of the rail in the usual manner, while the body or shank e' of the spike passes down through the plate and cushionC and D and is contained or embedded in a hard metallic socket a, formed in the cement tie. The manner of making these sockets and embedding the shank of the screw therein is as follows: A hole is first cast in the cement tie properly located to receive the ting for the spike.
threaded shank of the spike. This is then placed in the hole, and cut wire or nails, small pieces of steel, iron, or other pieces or particles of matter a dropped in around it. Hot Babbitt metal (0 or other suitable material is then put into the hole, filling up the interstices and forming With the metallic particles a composition which forms a hard secure set- Afterward it may be turned down or tightened by screwing it in the usual manner, by which means the flanged head of the bolt or spike may be made to grip tight against the flange of the rail.
In case it is desired to loosen the bolt this may be done simply by unscrewing it, or the boltmay be entirely removed and replaced by a new one.
Having thus fully described my invention,
of the United States- 1. A fastening of the character specified comprising a base of plastic material having a hole formed therein, and metallic filling in said hole comprising hard particles of matter, the interstices between which particles are filled with a softer metal.
2. The process of making a fastening of the character specified consisting in placing in a hole formed' in a base of plastic material a threaded member, then pouring into said hole a hard, metallic filling.
3. The process of making a fastening of the character specified consisting in placing in a hole formed in a base of plastic material a threaded member, then placing hard pa'rticles of matter within the hole and around said threaded member and then pouring in a softer metallic filling.
HERBERT E. PERCIVAL.
In presence of- JNO. J. LABARTHE, M. C. PERCIVAL.
