LLB. DEPRIEST. RAILROAD TIE.
APPLICATION PILEDJULY-B, 1907.

JOSEPH B. DEPRIEST,'OF MANASSA, COLORADO.
RAILROAD-TIE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1908.
Application m g July 8; 1907. Serial No. 382,670.
' To all whom it may concern:
.portions 7 and Be it known that I, JosEPrrB; DEPRIEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manassa, 1n the county of Conejos, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the ,Same.
This invention relates to railroad tics and more particularly to that class which are of compositestructure and which. embody rail securing devices. 7
The primary object of the invention is to provide a tie of this class in which the rail securing devices, being embedded-in the tie, are so spaced as to properly aline the rails held thereby. Furthermore these rail securing devices are flush with the upper and under faces of the tie and consequently there is no likelihood of their being injured during the transportation of the tie.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tie embodying my invention, Fig. .2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view in detail through one end of the tie and a rail supportedthereby, and, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of one end of the tie with the rail removed.
In the drawings the numeral 5 denotes the tie preferably composed of cement, sand and gravel and 6 a rail supported thereon.
The device for securing the rail upon the tie and embodying my invention comprises in part a U-shaped member including spaced a connecting portion 8 the former being spaced apart a distance equal to the width of the base flange of the rail 6. The said element of the fastening device is embedded in the tie with the upper ends of its spaced portions 7 flush with the upper face of the tie and its connecting portion, 8 embedded in the under face of the tie and flush therewith as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Each of the portions 7 is provided with a longitudinally extending bore 9 which is threaded and which opens through the .upper end of its respective member. Screw. bolts are employed in connection with this element of the device for holding the rail upon the tie and each of these bolts includes a threaded shank 10 which is screwed into the corres onding bore 9 and an integral annular ral -flange-engaging collar portion 1 1 which has a concaved under surface 12 of the same contour as the upper face of the outer edge portions of the rail base flange, it being understood that when the bolts are screwed into the bores as stated above the said collars will bear upon the said outer edge portions of the base flange of the rail and hold the same to the tie. Inorder that the screw bolts may be screwed intothe bores as stated, a square head 13 is formed integral with the upper face of .each of the collars or heads .11
so that a wrench may be engaged therewith.
.From the foregoing description of my invention it will be observed that while the rails aresecurely held in place upon the ties' embodied in my mvention, they may be readily removed should it become necessary by merel unscrewing the screw bolts.
. What 1s claimed, is
' A tie comprising a plastic body, a U shapedmember cylindrical throughout embedded in said body adjacent each end thereof, the arms of each U-shaped member being directed upwardly through the body with their ends flush with the upper face thereof, the said arms being formed'with threaded sockets, and rail flange engaging bolts screwed into the sockets.
In testimony whereof, I allix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH B. DEPRIEST.
