RAIL-TIE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it lmay Concern:
Be it known that l, DANIEL W. ONEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a composite railroad tie made of cement strengthened by steel reinforced beams.
lt is an object of the invention to simplify and improve the construction of this class of devices, and to provide a novel composite tie for holding the rails to the ties and permitting` easy attachment and detachment.
1t is also an object of this invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein strengthening bars are embedded in the ties and serve to bind the concrete together and to distribute the shocks and stresses.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character that is simple in construction, efficient in practice and economical to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section, Fig. 2 is a top plan of Fig. 1 with the rail detached therefrom. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on line 4 4; of Fig. 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawings 1, denotes the concrete tie clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. f
Embedded longitudinally of the concrete tie 1, are strengthening beams 2. rlhe lower opposing edges of the beams contact with a reinforcing rod 3. Furthermore the strengthening beams are bonded or united by means of the bolts 4, passing through openings 5 in the strengthening beams. These bolts are securely fastened by means of nuts 6 and V7. Arranged transversely of the strengthening beams 2 are metallic straps S. Depending from each of the straps are clamping members 9 and Q, the said members engaging the undersurface of the head 10, of the strengthening members. Contacting with the undersurfaces of the beams are chairs 11, provided with inturned flanges 12 and 13. These flanges engage the outer edge base portions of the beams and securely clamp the beams 2, and the rod 3. The straps 8, the chairs 11, and the bases of the beams 2, are provided with alining openings 14. Extending entirely through the tie and through these openings 14 are metallic tubes 15, said tubes forming passage ways through the tie. Bolts 16, are inserted through these passage ways from the underside of the tie and extend above the upper face of the tie. The extended portions of the bolts are threaded to receive the rail nut 17. rthe upper surface of the tie has embedded therein rail cushions 1S.
It will be observed that the metallic structure is such as to be easily and readily assembled before it is embedded within the concrete or plastic material.
Attention is directed to the fact that the openings 14- in the bases of the beams are square while those portions of the bolts positioned within these openings are square in cross section. rihis arrangement holds the bolts against rotation when the rail fastening means are being applied.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A plastic tie having embedded therein a metallic reinforcing means consisting of spaced beams and straps engaging the beams arranged transversely thereof, tubes extending through the straps forming passage-ways through the tie.
2. In a device of the class described comprising a body of plastic material and having embedded therein a metallic reinforcement consisting of spaced. beams extending longitudinally through the plastic material, a bolt connecting the beams, a spacing rod extending longitudinally through the plastic material, straps arranged transversely of the plastic body, one of said straps being provided with depending clamping members adapted to engage a portion of said beams.
