STREAK-PREVENTING DEVICE FOR GOBNICES.
Application filed J une 12, 1918. Serial No. 773,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boonton, in the county of Morris, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Streak-Preventing Devices for Cornices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to streak preventing devices for cornices.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a device of this character which is adapted to be positioned on the usual ornamental cornice of the building to prevent the dust which settles on the flat top portion of'the cornice from being washed over the edge of the latter by rain falling on the top surface of the cornice. By so preventing the dust being washed off the top surface of the cornice by the rain I avoid the streaking of the front face of the cornice.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more' fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a fragment of a building showing the device applied; Fig. 2, a plan view of what is shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the device detached.
Referring to the drawings A indicates generally a fragment of a building which includes the usual roof rafters 10 u on which are mounted roof elements 11. so
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
included on the building A is an ornamental cornice 13 which is rotected against streaking by the improved device and which supports a drain gutter 12. This device is shown as comprlsing a plate of sheet metal bent upon itself to form arms 14 and 15. The arm 14 is straight throughout while the arm 15 is provided witha centrally curved portion 16 and a laterally directed free end 17 which is adapted to lie against the upper side of the cornice to which latter it is secured by nails 18. The arm '14 of the device is secured against the frontof the cornice. The open space between the arms 14 and 15 is filled by means of a suitable cement 19' so as to impart the necessary strength and rigidity after same is applied in the manner aforesaid. .7 7
By this construction it will be apparent that during the vertical position of the arm 14 no dirt will collect thereon so that possibility of streaking the cornice in rainy weather is obviated.
What I claim is A device of the class described comprising a sheet metal plate adapted to surmount the flat to of a cornice, said plate being bent upon itself to form a vertical portion, the lower edge of which is adapted to be attached to the front edge of the cornice adjacent the flat top thereof, and an inclined portion adapted to overlie the flat top of the cornice, said inclined portion having a central outwardly curved section and a laterally directed free edge portion, the latter being adapted tobe attached to the rear edge of the flat top of the cornice substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY E. HARRIS.
Witnesses Mrs. HENRY SALMON, JENNm L. HARRIS.
