To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST A. LINDSTROM, a subject of Sweden, and a resident of Orange, in the county of Essex and Sta-te of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Hasp-Locking Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
rI his invention relates to hasp locking devices and the object thereof is to provide locking appurtenances without the use of pivots, springs or the like, and wherein a hasp thereof is maintained practically in one position, when disengaged from its hook or keeper.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a partial left hand side view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a partial right hand side View of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a partial rear elevation of Fig. 1 with the cover plate removed showing` the moving element of the invention in a changed position. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 with the moving element again changed in position. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the cover plate. Fig. 8 is a side view of Fig. 7, and Fig. 9 is an end view of the moving element.
A casing is shown at 10 having the front wall 14 and flanges 16 and 18 with thc projet-.tions 34. It has formed therewith a chamber 12, the upper portion of which has an opening 20 with the inside retaining edges 22 and 24, the outside supporting seats 26 and 28 and a depressed face 29.
A hasp is shown at 8O with the body portion 31 having at one end a head 32, with the bearing faces 39 and 41, and the ear 40 in which latter is formed an opening 42. At the other end of the said body portion 3l is formed a double hook 35 with the engaging faces 36 and 37. The said engaging faces 36 and 37 coact with the retaining edges 22 and 24 of the chamber 12 and prevent the hasp 30 from being dislodged from the said chamber. The bearing faces 39 and 41 of the head 32 form shoulders which can engage with the seats 26 and 28 of the casing 10.
Vhen the hasp 30 fully extends out of the casing 10 it is engaged with a pocket or keeper 50. The said pocket comprises a front wall 54, side walls 56 and 58, and ears 60. An upwardly projecting lug 62 is formed with the side wall 58, and has formed therewith a hole 64 which coacts with the hole 42 in the head 32 of the hasp 30, when the latter is locked with the pocket 50. A padlock or pin 68 can be inserted through the holes 42 and 64 to maintain the hasp and pocket in a locked position.
A cover plate 80 is located in the depressed face 29 of the casing 10. Notches 82 in said cover plate 80 engage with the projections 34 of the ianges 16 and 18 of the casing` 10 which is preferably of malleable material. rlhe said projections 34 can be riveted or upset to retain the cover in place.
The mode of operation has been partially described with the description of the elements, and it may be here noted that in Fig. 1 the hasp 3() is shown with its head 32 partially entered into the pocket 50. Nhen the head 32 is fully within the pocket 50 the hook end 35 is located in the chamber 12 of the casing 10 as shown in Fig. 5 with the engaging face 36 in engagement with the retaining edge 24, and the engaging face 87 in engagement with the retaining edge 26. At the same time the locking pin 63 is inserted through the openings 42 and 64. To disengage the hasp the pin 63 is withdrawn from the holes 42 and 64. The hasp 30 is then swung up disengaging the head 32 from the pocket 50, which at the same time lowers the double hook 35 into the chamber 12 until the faces 39 and 41 of the head 32 are supported on the seats 26 and 28 of the casing 10 as shown in Fig. 6. It will be noted that when the hasp 30 is out of use it is protected by being inclosed within the chamber 12 of the said casing 10.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a hasp locking device the combination of a casing, a chamber in the casing connecting with an opening formed in said casing, retaining edges in the chamber, a hasp with one end within said chamber and .engaging faces on the hasp coacting with the said retaining edges of the chamber.
2. ln a hasp locking device the combination of a casing, a chamber in the casing connecting with an opening formed in said casing, retaining edges in the chamber, a hasp with one end within said chamber, engaging faces on the hasp coacting with said retaining edges of the chamber, a head on the hasp and a pocket to lock with said head.
8. In a hasp locking device the combination of a casing, a chamber in the casing connecting with an opening formed in said casing, supporting seats formed With the casing, retaining edges in the chamber, a hasp with a hook portion thereof Within said chamber, engaging faces on the hook portion formed to coact With said retaining edges When the major portion of the hasp is Withdrawn from said chamber, supporting seats on the casing, a head formed With the hasp supported on the said supporting seats When the major portion of the hook is With in the said chamber, and a pocket for the device in the path of the head of the hasp When the latter has its major portion Withdrawn from said chamber.
4. In a hasp locking device the combination of a casing, a chamber in the casing connecting With an opening formed in said casing, retaining edges in the chamber, a hasp With a double hook at one end thereof Within the chamber, engaging faces on the double hook coacting With the said retaining edges, a head at the other end of the hasp, an ear on the said head having an opening, a pocket to lock With said head, a lug for said pockethaving an opening coacting with the opening in the head When the latter is locked With the pocket.
5. In a hasp locking device the combina* tion of a casing7 a chamber in the casing connecting With an opening formed in said casing, a hasp having one end Within said chamber, means to retain one end of said hasp in said chamber, a pocket having an opening for the other end of said hasp coacting With said openings to lock the hasp and pocket together.
6. In a hasp locking device the combination of a casing, a chamber in said casing' connecting with an opening formed in said casing, retaining edges in the chamber, supporting seats on the casing, a hasp with a hook at one end thereof Within the chamber, engaging faces on the hook` coacting with said retaining edges, a head for the other end of the hasp, a pocket to lock With said head when the head is Withdrawn from the chamber, bearing faces of the head coacting With supporting seats on the casing When the hasp 1s within the chamber, a depressed face at the rear of the casing, a cover plate located in the said depressed face, and projections on the casing coacting With notches in the plate.
