SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,353, dated March 27, 1894.
Application filed January 28, 1893. Serial No. 460,119. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN S. MILLARD, of Kansas City, inthe county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever Cam Latches, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My lnvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in latches for refrigerators or other doors, and which may also be used 1n other connections if desired; and my lnvention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I, represents a sectional view of a refrigerator or other door with my improved latch attached thereto, showing the manner of forcing the door open either from the inner side of the door or the outer side of the same, a portion of the brackets to which the levers are pivoted being shown in section to more clearly show the operating parts. Fig. II, is a front view showing the nose of the latch in its raised position. Fig. III, is a sectional View of the door, shbwing the levers in full, with the door closed and thelatch in posltlon to hold the door in its closed position. Fig. IV, is a top View of the latch. Fig. V, 1s a detail View showing the under side of the inner lever.
Referring to the drawings, 1, represents the amb of a door for a refrigerator, a refrigerator car door or the like, 2, representing the door proper.
3, represents a plate having outwardly extending lugs 4., to which a lever latch 5, is pivoted, as shown at 6, said latch being provided with a handle 7, preferably made curved in form so as to give a good hold to the operator in forcing the door open.
8, represents a plate secured to the jamb of the door, as shown at 9, there being a recess 10, between a portion of said plat-e and the jamb of the door. The latch 5, is provided with an integral lug 11, extending into the recess 10, beneath the plate 8, and being made concave in form, as shown at 12, so that any direct outward pressure against the door 2, will cause the lug 11, to come in contact with the top of the plate 8, in order to facilitate the retaining of the latch in the recess 10, said plate being provided with a bead 13, on its forward lower end. The latcho is also provided with a nose It, by which said latch is pivoted to the lugs 4, as before described, and as shown at 6, said nose having an elongated point 15, extending beyond said pivotal point. As the handle 7, of the latch is grasped and forced outward the point of the nose 14, will come in contact with the top of the plate 8, as shown at 16, (Fig. 1,) and as the handle is forced still farther from the door 2, said door will be forced outward, as shown in Fig. I.
.It is well known that refrigerator doors either on cars or stationary refrigerators become damp and swell, and great difficulty is experienced in the opening of the same. The object of my invention is to start the door open with the latch, as shown, by means of the leverage, as explained; after which it is readily opened the rest of the way. When it is desired to close the door, the lever is forced inward, the point 17, of the lug 11, coming in contact with the bead or rounded face 13, on the plate 8, and as said lug is, as before described, made in curved or concave form, the door will be forced into a tightly closed position by the time that the lever 7, has reached the position shown in Fig. III.
As it frequently occurs that refrigerator doors are accidentally closed while a person is on the insideof a refrigerator, the doors being very thick, it is almost impossible to be heard from the outside; and to avoid any accident of this kind, and also to enable the operator, when entering a large refrigerator, to close the door after him, to prevent inrush of the warm air, I provide the lever 18, having a hand piece 19, preferably made in curved form, so as to be readily grasped and retained, said lever being pivoted to a plate 20, secured to the inner side of the door 2, as shown at 21.
22, represents a pin extending diagonally through the door 2, said pin being slightly longer than the width of the door. The 1ever 18, is provided with anintegral lug 23, which limits the inward movement of the pin 22, (see Fig. III) and which forces said pin outward as the level- 18, is forced from the position shown in Fig. III, to that shown in Fig. I, the inner end of the pin 22, traveling in a curved face 24, of said lever. As the pin 22, is forced outward by the lever 18, the outward end of the same will bear against the latch 5, as shown at 25, travelingon a curved face 26, of said latch and forcing said latch outward into the position shown in Fig. I, thus unlatching the door from theinner side. The door 2, may be closed without touching the latch 5, as the tendency is, when the door is being closed with some force for the handle 7, to extend or fly outward, as shown in Fig. I; then when the door comes in contact with the jamb, the momentum of the latch 5, will cause the same tospring aroundinto position shown in Fig. III, and securely fasten the door without paying any further attention to the same. The lugs t, are provided with openings 27-, through which, if desired, a lock or seal may be inserted to lock said latch in its "closed position.

I'claim as my invention 1. A pivoted latch having an opening and retaining projection, said retainingtpnofiection being made concave in form; a plate having a recess beneath the sa-me,and arounded portion on said platewithwhich said-concave-re- 1 tai n ing projection engages; substantially as described.
2. A pivoted latch having an opening projection 14, with rounded nose; a plate having lugs to which said latch is pivoted; a retaining projection; a plate having a recess into which said retaining projection enters, lateral projections on the retainer and an aperture 29 in said first mentioned plate for the reception of said lateral projections; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A pivoted latch secured to the outer side of the door; a pin passing through the door, and means for forcing said pin outward and unlocking said latch from the inner side of the door; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of a latch; a pin extending through a door, and a lever for forcing said pin outward in order to unlock said latch; substantially as set.forth.
5. The combination of apivoted latch having a retaining extension; a pin extending through a door, and a lever havinga concave face, by which means said latch may be u nfastened from the innerside'of thedoor; suicstan-tiaily as and for the purpose described.
6. The combinationcfa pivoted lever having a netainingprogjectionwitha concaveslmrfacega pines tendingth rough thedoor; a lever pivoted to the inner side of the door, having a lug 23, and a concave taco 24min whidhrstuid pin travels as said latch is opened from the innerside of thedoor; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
