` AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA UG. 99999 1. 1,029,719. 'Patented June 18,1912.
MARSHALL SAUCEDO, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFOENIA.
SIDEWALK-BOX COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 9, 1911.
Patented J une 18, 1912.
Serial No. 643,203.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAnsI-IALL SAUGEDO, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sidewalk- Box Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a side walk box cover, and the Object of the invention is to prevent the removal of the cover from such boxes by children, or by other unauthorized parties.
The invention consists of a 'cover which can be readily locked in position by means of a key of a particular construction, in combination with a suitably constructed box cover and the said key is presumed to be held in the possession of the adjoining property owner, or to be held by the agent of the corporation owning the water or gas mains to which said boxes lead.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fg. 1, showing the position of the key for the purpose of unlocking the cover. Fig. 4 is a Similar section showing the position of the key for the purpose .of looking the cover.
In these drawings 1 represents the upper portion of the box, which box is provided with a circular removable perforated cover portion 2. It will be understood however that the shape of the cover 2 and the perforations are not essential to the invention, but are merely parts of the preferred form of construction. This cover is provided with a radial slot 3, and also with an oblong slot 4, which is parallel to it and adjacent the opposite side or margin of the cover. These slots are the only portions of the invention which appear upon the outside. The interior of the box carriesupon its top a circular flange 5, which flange is cut as shown at 6, said cut portion being in alinement with the adjacent slots 3 and 4: respectively. At the end of the radial slot 3 a lug 7 is formed upon the under face of the cover and engages the adjacent cut out portion 6 of the flange. Upon the opposite side of the cover, and also upon the under face of the cover is a guide way 8, in which slides the body portion of a wedge shaped bolt 9,
the outer end of which is provided with a transverse head 10. This bolt is adapted to pass through the other cut outportion 6 of the flange 5, opposite that portion engaged by the lug 7, and the said bolt and lug together lock the cover in place. The key consists of a suitable handle 11 provided with a curved member 12, a shoulder 13 opposite the point of the hook, and a stop 14 upon the rear curved face of the hook menber.
To unlock the cover the hook member is inserted in the slot L with the point of the hook bearing upon the head 10 of the bolt and the shoulderbearing upon the cover. The handle is then drawn in the directon of the arrow (Fig. 3) until the stop 14 engages the cover. This will cause the bolt to slide in the guide way 8 a suflicient distance to disengage it from the top of the box withdrawing it from the cut out portion 6 of the flange 4:.
To lock the cover in position the key is inserted in the slot 3 and moved in the opposite directon. This causes the bolt to move back along the guide way 8 and through the adjacent cut out portion 6 of the flange 5 and the cover is again locked upon the box.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a box, a cover for said box, said cover being provided with two ofl'set slots, a guide way carried by the under side of the cover, a bolt slidable in the guide way and adapted to be moved in one directon to engage a portion of the box, and a key adapted when inserted in one slot to move the bolt in one directon and when inserted in the other slot to move the bolt in the other directon.
2. The combination with a box having a cut out top portion, a cover adapted to close said cut out portion, said cover having slots adjacent its opposite margins, a guide way in alinement with one o-f said slots, a bolt slidable in said guide way and adapted to engage the under side of the box top, a transverse head carried by the bolt and -lying between said slots, and a key adapted to be inserted through said slots to engage respectively opposite sides of said head.
