CHECK-BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Application flled December 30, 1909. Serial No. 535,544.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL T. LEvnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to check-books emloyed by depositors for withdrawing funds rom banks, trust companies and like financial institutions; and the object of the invention is to provide a book of the above 3 is a side elevation of the check-book. Fig.
4 is a fragmentary detail view, on an en-' lar ed scale, of one end of said book.
11 the drawings, 10 represents the several leaves which serve the u ose of the usual and well known blankc ec s and, taken collectively, form thecheck-book. These checks are perforated as shown at 11, so as to rovide the usual stubs 12. The check-boo is provided with a flexible cover or backiece 14, which corresponds to the size 0 the leaves 10. The back 14 is preferably composed of paper, generally of a heavier weight than t at formin the leaves 10, and these backs may be suita ly embellished on the outer surface to imitate alligator hide, and the like, if desired. Leather or other suitable material in the lace of aper may be used to form the bac s 14. he checkbooks are also provided with flaps 17 which are formed of press-board or similar stiff material. These fla s are placed on top of the leaves and at t e ends containin the stubs. The fla s 17, leaves 10 and the acks 14 are secure to ether by stitching or binders wire 18. be free ends of the fla s 17 form ton ues to hold the free ends of t e backs 14 an the leaves 10, when the latter are bent over and. thrust under said tongues in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The flaps 17 bein composed of pressboard or like materia have considerable rigidity and strength, the nature of the material being such as to resist force having a tendency to raise the flaps up off of the leaves 10. Hence the flaps form a clamp to tightly press the free ends of the backs 14 and leaves 10 against the underlying surface of the leaves when the free ends of the latter are pushed and become wedged under said flaps. After the back 14, leaves 10 and flaps 17 are secured together by means of the stitching or wire 18, a binder 20, enerally formed of woven fabric, is paste around the end of the book, allowing it to extend across the face of the flaps and a short distance alon the back. The binder 20 hides the stitc ing or wire 18 and imparts a finished appearance to the book.
In closed position the lengths of the checkbooks are reduced one-half of their original size, so that the space reri uired for carrying them is corresponding y reduced. This feature is especially appreciated by women whose means for carrym various articles is necessarily limited, at t e same time the actual size of the checks are retained so as to conform to the size of the bank checks universally in vogue.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A check-book com rising a plurality of leaves, a back arrange beneath said leaves, a flap, composed of stiffer material than that emp oyed in the leaves and back, forming a catch for the free ends of the leaves an back when the latter are folded over and pushed thereunder, and a fastener for securin the leaves back and flap together.
2. check-book com rising a plurality of leaves, a back arrange beneath said leaves, a fia composed of stiffer material than that emp oyed in the leaves and back, forming a catch for the free ends of the leaves and back when the latter are folded over and ushed thereunder a fastener for securing the eaves back and a together, and a binder pasted around the astened ends of the leaves, back and flap and ada ted to conceal the fastener and impart a nished appearance to the book.
In witness whereof, I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 30th day of November, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and nine.
