l The invention relates to book covers and *more particularly to covers or cover blanks for a flat-opening check book.
The object of? the invention is to produce a cover that islbothsimple and economical to manufacture and one that :lends itself. i
readily to being assembled by automatic machinery. The" cover for this type of check book, which is disclosed in my Patent No.
1,606,213, dated November 9, 1926, comprises side cover boards, a back stiifening board,
and. strips adjacentand between said side -coverb0ards and :back stiffening board.-
which is of extreme neatness in appearance.-
The present invention contemplates cutting a series of grooves between the side;-
' cover boards, adjacent strips and back stifs:
fening board. These grooves extend completely across the blank and-are cut approxi-.. mately through the blank, leaving only a sufiicient amount of material to hold thev boards and strips together so as to permit of the blank being handled as one piecewhen assembling it with the outside cover. sheet. Other features of the invention will become apparent as this specification proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings forming,
a part hereof:
Fig. l is a plan view of a sheet of material from which a plurality of blanks may be cut;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a single blank;
Fig. 3 is a plan View of'the blank with the outside cover sheet attached; I
Fig. 4; is a plan view of the blank as illustrated in Fig. 3 with the reinforcing stripping and paste down sheets attached length of the sheet.
17are wider than the grooves 15 a purpose later ,described.
I11 thisview the cover is complete a d i of the paste down sheetsare broken away to show parts underneath;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on Fig. 4:; and
line of completed checkbook. V V
;. In. Fig. 1 the reference numeral: 10; designates a large sheet of cardboard or similar material. This sheet; has" been trimmed down from a standard size sheet such as anight be shipped from the mill or it might Fig. 6 is a fragmentary endiview of the Y be a sheet of standard size.- -By means'of suitable mechanism a series of grooves @1l are formed, the grooves extending, the' entire The sheet is then cut along the broken linesl2 and a. plurality of individual blanks, 13 .are provided. ,The
factthat thegrooves run entirelyacross'the largesheet 1 0 'makes for great economy of production; -The operation, of cuttingthe grooves 7 across the large sh p is practically no more work than 'wouldbe' involved in c ng gro ves f .0 6 b nk-and y this m od 1aplu li y. .Q b ks. ar g o d. with the one operation. The; blanks 13 or large sheets lQ'mightbe manufactured with the groovesalready,formedtherein. i I 1 One of the blanks is illustrated in Fig. 2, in which it will, be ;v noted, that the grooves 14:, 15,16 and. 17- run entirely across the blank,; and divide it into two large cover boards 18,,aback stiffening-boardjll) and two i'strips 20. The -,grooves are reasonably J wide and arecutto a substantial depth,
leaving only ..a-suflicient amount of material gto permit of the blank beinghandled asone piejc'e fwhen assemblingf'withthe cover sheet, 7
hereinafter described; The grooves 14 and and 16 for.
I The outside cover? sheet 21, made of a leather'or ,otherfsuitable material is coated with adhesive for securing it to'theblank '13,
or, conversely theblank may befcoatedwith adhesive' material and the-cover sheet ap plied thereto. Themargins2 2 of the cover sheet are folded over andadhesively secured along the edges of, the -.blank on the side durable grade of paper, ifabric, imitation the inside of the cover blank.
I v with the cover sheet it may be handled as and inefficiency that would be entailed in "handling the cover board and strips as 20 book eras hinge portions after complete -assembly. i 25 opposite Where the'cover sheet is applied, as illustrated in Fig. 3. As shown in this figure and Fig. 5, the outside cover sheet is applied to the side of the blank in which the grooves are formed.
A reinforcing stripping 23 is applied to This reinforcing stripping is preferably secured to the cover blank over the area of the strips 19,20, 20 and adjacent edges of the panels 18, 18. Paste down sheets 24 are adhesively secured to the inner sides of the cover-boards 18 and'the binder is then completed. 7
By grooving the blank as'heretofore described it is obvious that in assembling it one unit and thus save a great deal of labor separate'pieces. The slight amountof material that is left inthe grooves does not in any way interfere with the flexibilityof the The completed book is shown in Fig.6. The centralstrip 19 termed the back stiffening board forms the back 25 of the book. The adjacent strips 20 act as the binding portions 26 "and the large panels 18 form the covers 27. The sheets 28 aresuitably' bound at 29 byposts passing through the sheets and binding portions 26 in such a manner as to insure the book opening flat; The nature ofthe binding is disclosed in my Patent No. 1,606,213, previously mentioned. The grooves 15' and 16 allow for the bends 30, while the wider grooves '14: and 17 form the cover hinges 31. As more flexibility is f desired at the hinges 31 than at the bends 30, the grooves 14 and1'17, are made'wider than the grooves 15 and 16. v
ficint size from which a plurality of check book fillerblanks may be formed, said sheet having four parallel grooves at its central portion, and being adapted to be cut so as to' for'rn a pluralityof filler blanks for book covers, each filler blankhavingfour parallel groovesat its central portion.
3. Afiller blank for a book cover, com; prising asubstantiallyrectangular sheet of stiff material'having four parallel, grooves cut acrosssaid sheet at approximately the central portion thereof, said grooves being out entirely across said blank and leaving" onlya thin web of material so as to'permit of said blank beinghandled in one piece.
' Intestimony whereofl afiix my signature.
HENRY K LEY. v
The' cover is designed for what is com- 7' monly known as a desk check book, pref- V erably threeor more checks deep; The side cover boards 18 are of appropriate dimensions for the size and number of checks and their stubs oneach page. The strips 20 through ,which the binding posts 29' pass g may be of a standardwidth regardless of the size and number of sheets in the book 19 is controlled by the number of pages in the book or the thickness of the book.
1 From the foregoing taken in connection; with the accompanying drawings it is thought the operation and 7 construction of my book cover-- will be clear to those skilled in-the art." 'Whilea preferred form of the invention has been described and illustrated various changes in size, shape, proportions and details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit'and scope of the appendedclaims. 7 hat I claim is:
"flfA filler blank for a book cover,'comand the width of the back stiffening board 7
