3 Claims.
This invention relates to a cover construction for loose leaf binders of the type shown in our copending application, Sr. No. 260,054, filed March 6, 1939, of which this is a division, such binders being used for'the recording of documents such as deeds, mortgages, assignments, etc.
These binders are large heavy books handled daily by the public in examining recordedinstruments and accordingly, the binders receive rough and severe usage. Up to the present time, it has been conventional practice to form the cover members of laminated cardboard which is covered with suitable material, such as leather or buckram. The binders are handled mainly by the cover members and accordinly covers of such construction need frequent repairing.
This invention has as an object a cover construction formed of sheet metal so fabricated as to be particularly rugged and durable in use and economical in manufacture, the cost of cover members embodying our invention being somewhat less than the cost of the conventional cardboard cover. The cover is fabricated in such a manner as to present a neat and attractive appearance to the binder and to closely resemble and match up with binders already in use which are provided with the conventional cardboard cover.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a loose leaf binder provided with a cover embodying our invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the binder.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the inner side of one of the covers with parts in section.
The covers may be attached to any suitable back structure and leaf impaling mechanism. As here ShOWIL'thB back structure consists of a trough-shaped member ID formed of sheet metal and provided with hinge eyes along each edge thereof, a flat inner back member ll extending across the member and being likewise provided along opposite edges with hinge eyes arranged in alinement with the hinge eyes of the trough-shaped member ID.
The leaf impaling mechanism consists of a plate l2 secured to the inner back member ll and formed with hinge eyes i3 to which are pivotally mounted housings Hi to enclose and slidably receive a pintle bar [5 to detachably secure the ends of the posts It to the respective housmgs.
The covers consist of a shell formed of sheet metal consisting of a main panel 20 having a flange or tab 2| extending laterally from one side thereof and being formed with spaced apart hinge eyes 22. The marginal portion about the main panel 20 is preferably formed on a slight angle to make an inclined marginal surface 23. The hinge eyes 22 are spaced apart and arranged to be positioned between the hinge eyes on the outer and inner back members I0, II, the covers being secured thereto by a pintle rod 24.
The cover construction further includes a filler member 25 formed of heavy cardboard, or like material, and which is arranged on the inner side of theshell and with the marginal portion thereof beveled or inclined complemental to the inclined surface 23 of the shell. The marginal portion of the shell is bent inwardly to form an annular flange 26 encircling the ends and the outer side of the filler member 25 and'preferably the marginal surfaceof the cover is of sufficient extent to be bent inwardly to form inwardly extending flanges 27 overlapping the marginal surface of the under side of the filler 25 and serve to rigidly retain the filler member in proper position, and to make a neat and attractive inner cover surface. The filler member can not work or move toward the back member of the binder because of the incline surface 23 adjacent the flange 2|.
A liner 28, formed of sheet material of substantially the same thickness as the metal from which the shell is formed, is arranged within the flanges 21 and is secured to the surface of the filler member 25 by adhesive or the like, and the cover is completed by a finishing layer 29 overlying and secured to the liner 28 and slightly overlapping the flanges 21.
The exterior surface of the shell is provided with a baked coating of resinous lacquer applied in such a manner as to closely simulate the appearance of a leather bound volume. The cover is not only more serviceable in the handlingof the binder, but is a great deal more durable in that it is not affected by excessive moisture. This is a practical advantage in that older record books are often dead filed or stored in the basement of buildings where they are subject to excessive dampness during the summer months. The conventional cover fabricated from cardboard becomes badly warped under such conditions and often damaged beyond repair.
What we claim is: 1
1. A cover construction for loose leaf binders comprising a one-piece integral shell formed of sheet metal with spaced apart hinge eyes along one side thereof, said shell consisting of a main panel forming the outer surface of the cover, a filler member arranged on the inner side of said shell, said shell being formed with an annular flange encircling the end edges and the outer side edge of said filler member, and a finishing sheet overlying said filler member.
2. A cover construction for loose leaf binders comprising a one-piece integral shell formed of sheet metal with spaced apart hinge eyes along one side thereof, said shell consisting of a main panel forming the outer surface of the cover, a filler member arranged on the inner side of said shell, the marginal portion of said shell being bent inwardly forming inwardly extending flanges overlapping the marginal portion of said filler member and retaining the same within said shell.
3. A cover construction for loose leaf binders comprising a one-piece integral shell formed of sheet metal with spaced apart hinge eyes along one side thereof, said shell consisting of a main panel forming the outer surface of the cover, the marginal portion of said panel being beveled and bent inwardly to form an inwardly extending flange arranged in parallel spaced relation to said panel, a relatively thick fibrous filler member arranged on the inner sideof the panel with its marginal portion arranged within said flange and being beveled complemental to the bevel of the marginal portion of the panel, a liner formed of sheet material of substantially the same thickness as the metal from which said shell is formed adhesively secured to the inner side ofsaid filler member and arranged within said flange, and a finishing sheet overlying said liner sheet and being adhesively secured thereto.
