WIT/1E ss- FLOYD G. BOLTON, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO MCMILLAN Patent ed an .15, 1932' r f OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORQAYIION OF LNEw YORK Eur; vOFF1.613%;
BOOK COVER Application filed April 4, 1930. j Serial No. 441,549.
This invention relates to anew and improved book cover. 7 y r c In making covers for books which are to be used commercially and thus be subjected tohard usage, it is usual to place a textile covering on the body of the cover on the outside and then to protect the outer .corners.
' of the cover with a protective covering of, as
for instance, leather; I
These protective'coverings for the corners of the cover are usually secured in place by means of some adhesive, and being affixed to theuppersurface of the textile covering, they will extend upwardly theiriown thickness from such textile material. i Y
When protective coverings areput on; in this way, there is a great liability, and it frequently happens, that the protective covering during use will be loosened from the textile material due to the fact thatsuch protective covering extendslupwardly from the V textile material and presents an edge on which the fingers of the user will frequently catch.
The main object of my invention is to provide a cover which will have the protective covering assembled on the textile material in sucha way that itvwill present no exposed edge with the result that there is no liability of the protective coveringbecoming loosened during use.
Other objects and advantages relate to size, shape and arrangement of parts and the method of assembling the same, allas will more fully appear from the following description taken in connection with the accom- V panying drawings in which Figure l is a perspective view'of a book having my improved cover. r e F igure 2 1s ai section on llne 22of Figurel. I 1;- Figure 3 1s a-fragmentary perspective view of one corner of a cover without the protective covering for such corner. V c
It will be understood thatthe type of book with which-my covers are-to be used is immaterial, but for the purposefof describing my invention, I have here showna book "which is usually known as a prong loose' leai binder in-which is" provided opposed back members of covering 9 will bebeneath the upper surthe inwardlyextending edges of coverings 7 land 2 hingedly connected together and each beingflprovided with a 'plurailty ofopposed To one longitudinal edge of back member face of the bookbinders board 6 and has its edges turneddown-andunder to extend a c short distance inwardly on the under surface ofcover4. u l
I then form adjacent each outer corner of a cover 4 a groove 8 which extends: from the outer edge of cover 4 to the front edge of cover 4. The positioncof groove 8 in relation to the corners of the cover 4 may be varied as desired depending upon the shape and size it is desired to have the protective covering whiclris about to be described.
For the sake ofuniformity and attractiveness of appearance, I prefer to so locate groove 8 that it, with the two sides of the adjacent corner of the book, will form approximately an isosceles triangle,
' I then form from leather orother appropriate material, a triangle-shaped protective covering 9 which'is provided on its under surface with an adhesive. One edge of covering 9 is then positioned in-groove 8, groove. 8 being of a suflicient depth so that the edge face of the covering 7. r
The protective covering 9 is then placedin' positionon the outer corner of cover 4 and is :bent downwardly and inwardly so that it extends a short distance on the undersurfa'ce of cover 4. I then adhesively secure to the ally of paper which has its edges overlying and 9.
e; to I under surface of cover 4, a covering 10 usu- It Will be understood that I provide grooves 8 and protective coverings 9 for the two outer corners of both covers 4 and 5.
Although I have here shown and described a cover and protective coverings for the corners thereof of a particular shape and size,
it will be understood that the shapes and sizes of covers and protective coverings for the corners and the location of the grooves 8 3 relation to theoorners of the covers may be varied as maybe the material from which i the various parts are made, for although I have shown and described a specific structure and form of part as an embodiment of an ex L emplification of my invention, I do' notdesire to restrict myself to the exact size, shape or relation of parts as various changes may be made Within the scope of the appended claim. V r i I claim:
"' l A book cover comprising a body portion having a groove in the outer side thereof extending diagonally from a longitudinal edge of the body portion to an outer end thereof so as to define a substantially triangular portion at the corner of the body portion and a protective covering of leather secured to the body portion having its inner edge seatedfin the groove and lying below-the outer surface of the body portion and having its other edges extending around the longitudinal edge of the body portion and the outer. end of the same, as defined by said groove.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28 day of March, 1930. 1 i
a V FLOYD V G. BOLTON.
