' APPLICATION FILBDHAR. 28, 1911. I v 1,021,908, Patented Apr. 2, 1912.

Gamma HENRY N. YERG-ER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOOKBINDING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Application filed March 28, 1911. Serial No. 617,433.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY N. Ynncnn, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bookbinding, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in bookbinding and has for its main object to produce a means for more securely binding together the leaves in a book. p
With this and other objects in view I have invented the improved method of bookbinding illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, of a book having its cover partially removed therefrom. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a book having its cover partially removed and the body thereof being shown partially in section, the section being taken on line A-A of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a bound book having one cover opened and the ,first leaf of the book partially turned up,
and Fig. 4 is an enlarged exaggerated end view of a book one corner thereof being taken in section.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several views of the drawings, in which 1 illustrates the body of a book which is composed of a number of sections 2, which are bound together in the usual way, and 3, 4, and 5 indicate the cover of the book. A sheet 7 is doubled upon itself forming leaves 8 and 8' and has a reinforcingineniber 9 placed therebetween at the doubled portion of the sheet. Thismember is also doubled upon itself and is made preferably of linen or other substantial material of this charactor.
A padding 10 is pasted over the back sections of the book and a reinforcing member 6 covers this padding and extends down on both sides of the book. To this member the rear portion of the back of the book is securely glued, and the sheets 8 are tightly glued to the two inner sides of the cover.
After the reinforcing member 6 has been glued to the book and the upper portion of the sheets 8, the outer sections which form the book are sewed together by stitching 11 which starts at lines 12 and 13 and runs obliquely outward to a line 14 between the sheets 8 and 8' and engages the inner porthis stitching is done, the back 4 of the book cover is securely glued on to the reinforc- 7 tion 15 of the reinforcing member 9. After i I binding a number of sections together then pasting a padding to the back of said sections, then placing a reinforcing member over said padding, then stitching certain of said sections, said padding and said reinforcing member together.
2. A method of book binding consisting of binding a number of sections together, then placing a doubled securing sheet having a doubled reinforcing member therein against the outermost of said sections, then pasting a padding on said sections, then' stitching certain of said sections, said sheet and reinforcing member and said padding together.
3. A method of book binding consisting of binding a number of sections together, then placing a doubled securing sheet having a doubled reinforcing member therein against the outermost of said sections, then pasting a padding on said sections, then placing another reinforcing member over said padding, then stitching certain of said sections, said sheet and doubled reinforcing member, said padding and said second're; inforcing member together.
4. A method of book binding consisting of binding a number of sections together, then placing a doubled securing sheet having a doubled reinforcing member therein against the outermost of said sections, then pasting a padding on said sections, then ing a doubled reinforcing member therein, pasting the outer portions of said doubled 10 against the outermost of said sectlons, then sheet agalnst said cover.
pasting it padding on sand sectlons, then In testimony whereof I aflix my slgnature, placing another reinforcing member over 1n presence of two Witnesses.
said padding, then stitching certain of said ENRY N YER ER sect-ions, said sheet and said doubled rein- II G forcing member, said padding and said sec- Witnesses: 0nd reinforcing member together, then past- F. HOWARD MILLER, mg a cover to said relnforclng member, then A. WALTER MILLER.
