APPLEGATIGH FILED JULY 14, 1909.

DGGR-SECRER.
negeer.
Application filed July Hi To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that L FRANK RoniNSoN, a citizen o't' the Unite( States, residin` at Chicago, eounty ot Cook, State ot illinois, have invented a certain new and usetul inn provement in Door-Seenrers, and declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact; description ot the Samey Sueh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the saine, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, which torni a partof this epeeitieation.
My invention han for ital object to provide a eimple and poweritul look for doorn or the like which will positively prevent them trom being opened from without.
A further object ot my invention is to provide a Simple and compact auxiliary loek tor doors or the like which may be carried about in the pocket or hand luggage and applied to doors wherever the owner of the look may happen to be.
The various Jfeatures of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with partieularity in the Claim; but, tor a tull understanding ot my invention and ot' its object and advantagen` reference may be had to the t'ollowing` detailed deeeription taken in Connection with the aeeoinpanying` drawing. wherein:
Figure l is a Section taken through a door and adjacent; jamb Showingl in v improved loek in position g Fig. 2 a perepeetive view oit the loek` the holding key being' omitted; Fig. 3 is a. Section taken on line Zlwil ot llig. Q; and Figi'. t ie a aide view ot the holding' key.
l.te'terriire' to the drawing'. repreeente a door and B the door jainb. a is the usual knob-operated dog' which springs into the eoeket in the jainb when the door ie eloeed. All of these parte may Vtake any usual or preferred torina and they have theretore not been illustrated in detail and will not be described further.
ln aeeordanee with my invention. I pro vide an elongated tlat plate C near one end ot which is a laterallyprojecting lip l). Fittingupon this plate is a slide l which may be slipped on and ott' at will. The. plate in provided with a series ot Small openings arranged closely together So that a pin or key of some sort may be inserted at various pointe in rear of the Slide and no prevent the Slide from beingslipped ott). In the preferred arrangement ot these opening@- l Specification of Letters Patent.

provide two eeriee, the one being' designated at: l? and the other at (l. The openinge ot one serien are Staggered with resfpeet to thosel of the other eo that a rather line adjuatment may he obtained.
l'n using the device, against the door punt, while the door is open. the, lip l) being' inserted into the eoeket o. The door then eloeed :.nd holds; the plate in this; position until the door is again opened. The slide in then alipped in place and moved alone' the plate. until it engages; with the door, whereupon a pin or key ot' Sonie sort. Such ae, indicated at H ie inserted within the opening nearest the rear end ot the lSlide. ,lt it be now attempted to open the door the Slide will be toreed into engagement with the pin or key and the door will be held againet opening through a` rigid abutment. lt will therefore be eeen that it is impoeeible to open the door troni without unless euttieient torce is applied to break ynome part ot the deviee. When it in deeired to open the door. the pin or key iS simply removed. and the slide is retracted whereupon the door is 'tree to be opened in the usual way. y
The eeveral parte ina ,ot eoureebe made in varioue terms and Shapes. Thus the plate C may be provided with an opening; l in ath-*ance ot the lip il to permit the pae- `age oi the dop' or rateh o. rThe Slide may onvenientl-v be in the forni ot a Sleeve e having' a latterly-i)roieeting ril) @1. the eleev) portion tiltingY upon the plate and the rib serving as the shoulder to bear againstr the door. it"urtherniore, the Slide may be made ol1 Sheet metal doubled upon itself So as to Yliorin the rib and lie-.vingI 'tree endel bent into the lroper Hhapeil to torin the laleeve portion. l preter to eeeure the pin or key to the Slide b v means ol5 a Chain K or other flexible Connection so as to prevent it troni being lont. 'lhie tlexible Connection with the key serves an additional function ot holding the pin or key in plaee and prevt-ntingit trom beingl the plate is held jarred out ot' the opening in which it may be seated, and to thin end l pi'eter to make the eliain lonel enough so that it ea be wound partly around the plate when the pin or key in inserted in one of the openings. the weight of the Chain tending to draw the key tiarther into the opening.
Tillhile l have disclosed in detail a single preferred embodiment of my invention, I
lOl)
do not desire to be liinited to the exact structural details illustrated and described, but desire to cover all forms ot' iny invention falling Within the terms of the denitions thereof constituting' the appended claiin.
What I claim is:
ln a doorl securei', an elongated plate adapted to be inserted between the edge Vof a door and the jainb, a laterally-extending lip on said plate adapted to enter a recess in the jainb, a slide on said plate adapted to engage with the side of the door, said slide being foi-ined of a piece of sheet metal folded upon itself so as to produce a long, deep rib and having its free ends bent laterally so as to lie against the side of said plate and then folded oyer the edges of the plate so as to engage with the opposite side thereof, said plate 'having therein a series 20 ot' holes so positioned that soine one of the holes Will be adjacent to the rear end of the slide when the slide is positioned against the door, and a pin of such size as to be received by said holes, whereby the pin 25
