Description

(No Model.) I
F. C. KIRCHNER 8v W. WASYHBURN.
` DOOR SEGURER.v
No. 358,278. Patented Feb. 22, 1887'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK C. KIRCHNER AND WILLIAM H. WASHBURN, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,278, dated February 22, 1887. Application 'filed December 2, 1886. Serial No. 220,471A (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDERICK C. 'KIRCH- NER and WILLIAM H. WAsHBUEN, both citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specication.
This :invention relates to improvements in the door fastener for which Letters Patent No. 350,437 were issued to us October 5, 1886; and it consists in the combination of a plate having at one end an opening, a projection detachably fitted into said opening, a clamp movably connected with the plate, and a screw or equivalent for actuating 4the clamp, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional view of portions of a door and door-jamb, showing our invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a side view of the fastener; Fig. 3, a sectional View on the line m x, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 a detail perspective view of the projection.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will now describe the samein detail, referring to the drawings, where the letter A indicates a door which, as usual, closes against a jamb, B, to which is secured a catch-plate, C, the lock D being attached to the door. j
The door fastener comprises a fiat main plate, E, provided at one end with a rectilinear opening, e, into which is adapted to detachably t a secondary plate, f, carrying the lateral projection F. The main plate E is provided with a longitudinal slot, c, the sides of which form guides for the sliding clamp G, which is acted on by athumb-screw, into the head-piece b of the main plate. The clamp is provided at its sides with grooves c,
H, tapped which engage the sides of the slot a and serve to hold it from displacement.
In one use of our device the projection F on the auxiliary plate f is passed through the opening e in the main plate, and then the projection is inserted behind the catch-plate C while the door is open. The door is then closed, so that the main plateEwill bebetween the lock and the catchplate, while the edge of the lock case will bear directly against the secondary plate f, as shown in Fig. 1. The clamp G is then inserted into the slot a of the main plate and moved by the screw H until one of its legs d bears against the catch-plate D, while the other leg d bears against the lockcase D, thereby holding the door in position and preventing its being opened until relieved from the action of the fastener.i The device may be used without the auxiliary platef and projection F by removing them, so that the Vbolt of the lock can beshot and passed through the opening e in the main ening up the clamp.
By the construction described it will be evident that the fastener can be used in connection with any style of lock and catch-plate.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- The combination, with the main plate E, having an opening, e, of the projection F, fitted into said opening, the clamp G, movably attached to the main plate, and means, substantially as described, for actuating the clamp.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
