G. G. BAKER.
DOOR SEGURER.
No. 432,009. Patented July 15,1890.
INVENTOR wmvzsszsf {A (V @W L @M Q/W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE G. BAKER, OF CHILLICOTI-IE, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,009, dated July 15, 1890.
' Application filed December 3, 1889. $erial No. 332,488. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its objectan improvement in door-latches or door-fasteners, in which by placing it in its proper position a door will be firmly secured from the inside, so that it will be impossible for any one to open the door from the-outside.
It may be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- The figure shows the device in central longitudinal section in its position holding the door.
In the figure, B represents a cut section of the door, and A a cut section of the doorjamb. 0 refers to a steel bar, D to a case inelosing the bar G, E to a catch-lever, which is properly pivoted, and J K to shoulders or projections from the case.
In operation, the door being open, the case D is removed from the bar 0 and the sharpened projection L is inserted into the doorjamb up to the shoulder and the bar C is against the side of the door-jamb and continues out beyond the outer edges of said door-jainb. The door being closed, the frame orcase D is then passed over the bar 0.
The catch-lever E being depressed to allow its passage over the bar until the shoulders J K contact with the door-jamb on one side and the door on the other, when by releasing the catch-lever the spring which operates the lever throws the point of said lever into one of a series of perforations or holes in the bar, thus securely fastening the door. This bar is made of highly-tempered steel and the projecting part is made into a sharp blade,
so that it can be easily inserted into the wood of the door-jamb.
The blade L at the end of the bar 0 may be inserted by merely placing the bar against the side of the door-jamb and the point of the projection L touching the wood. Then by closing the door it will be seen that the sharp portion'L will be forced into the wood of the door-ja1 nb; but ordinarily it can be inserted by merely pressing in with the fingers. The case D may be cast or may be made in any way desired.
The particular advantage in this style of door fastener or lock is that it prevents the opening of the door from the outside. It is made in a small and convenient form, which may be carried in the pocket or in. a satchel, so that when rooms with old doors and poor locks are occupied by attaching this device or look it firmly secures such doors, or, in fact, any door to which it is applied. The ordinary door-lock has always an opening on the outside for the insertion of keys, and through which those skilled in opening or picking locks may secure an entrance; but it will be seen that this device when properly placed is not accessible by any tool which may be used by professional lock-breakers and is complete protection, against them.
Having thus fully described and shown the uses of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a door-securer, the metal bar 0, having a series of perforations and the blade L, the hollow casing D, which carries the bar 0, having the arms .I K, the lever E, attached to the casing D and provided with suitable spring device, all substantially as described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. G. BAKER.
