PASSENGER STRAP-HANGER.
Application filed March 27, 1909, Serial No. 486,091.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1910.
Renewed February 15, 1910. Serial No. 544,076.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM '13. Mo- Cxn'rnr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have in vented a new and Improved Passenger Strap-Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improved strap hanger for street cars, railway coaches and other passenger vehicles, and has in view a device of this nature to supplant the conventional leather strap, of sanitary and durable construction and presenting one or more surfaces suitable for advertisements. The customary leather strap hanger is of short life and readily becomes blackened by the absorptiomof grease and dirt under constant use, soiling the hands of passengers or the gloves which they may wear.
To overcome these objections I construct the hanger of non-absorbent material, as metal, the same embodying a bar body having one or more advertising faces and provided with detachable end members, one of which is provided with suspending means and the other with a hand-hold. By making the bar body detachable, a bar having one advertisement may be substituted for a bar having another advertisement, without discarding the entire hanger.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speci fication, in which similar characters of refcrence indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary inside view of a car, showing one form of my improved strap hanger applied to the hanger rod; Fig. 2 is a face view of the strap hanger shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the strap hanger on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a similar section on the line 44: of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a cross-section through a modified form of the invention; and Fig. 6 is a face view of another modified form of the hanger.
The hanger essentially consists of a ring 10 to connect it with the hanger rod of the car, either directly or through the intermediary of one or more members, a hand hold 11 by which the hanger is grasped by the passenger, and a bar body 12 connecting the ring and hand-hold together. The ring 10 has an integral or otherwise rigidly applied cap or attaching end portion 13 which is shown to be bifurcated to receive the upper end of the bar 12, the latter being secured in place by screws 14; or other equivalent devices and as shown in Figs. 1 to t inclusive, is constructed of two strips of sheet metal placed flat together, thus providing two faces on which advertisements may be placed, generally only one face of each strip being used for this purpose in order that the opposite and blank face may be turned outwardly and the advertisement obscured when the subscription terminates. The hand-hold 11 is preferably of stirrup shape and provided with an attaching end portion or cap 13 shown to be in all respects the same as the cap 13 and secured to the lower end of the bar body 12 by the screws 14. The cap 13, as best shown in Fig. 4t, is provided with a stud 15 at its lower end which is passed through an opening in the handhold guard and is provided with a nut 15*, permitting the hand-hold to turn in a plane at approximately right-angles to the length of the hanger to suit the position and convenience of the passenger.
In the form of the invention shown in. Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive, the strap hanger is suspended from the hanger rod of the car by a ring 16 and eye 17, the ring being constructed of two half sections hinged together at 18; each section having an external lip 19, with the lips 19 secured together by a screw 20 and provided with a common recess and an opening passing from the recess through the lower end, respectively receiving the head 21 and shank 22 of the eye 17. This construction permits of the hanger being applied to the hanger rod of the car without moving the hanger rod from its supports, and further permits of the bar revolving axially and displaying the advertising matter to all points in the car.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified form of bar body 12 the same being triangular in cross-section and accordingly presenting three fiat faces for advertising purposes. In other respects the construction is the same as that described, except that the caps 13", corresponding to the caps 13 and 13 are of triangular form to receive the opposite ends of the bar, instead of flattened shape as shown in the remaining drawing figures.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a further modified form of the invention, in which the stirrup hand-hold is made integral or rigid with the cap or end portion 13, corresponding to the cap 13 of Figs. 1 and 2; and the ring 10*, corresponding to the ring 10, is made sufficiently large to receive the hanger rod directly, in which event it is necessary to remove the hanger rod from its brackets and pass the ring 10 over the end of the rod in applying the hanger,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. The combination in a passenger strap hanger, of a bar body, caps fitting over the opposite ends of the body and rigidly secured thereto, suspending means connected to one of the caps, and a hand-hold connected to the other cap.
2. The combination in a passenger strap hanger, of a bar body, suspending means in connection with the upper end of the body, and a hand-hold in connection with the lower end of the body and revoluble in a plane approximately transverse to the length of the body.
3. The combination in a passenger strap hanger, of a bar body of two strips of sheet material arranged face to face, and end members, each detachably secured to both strips of the bar body, with the upper end member provided with suspending means, and the lower member having a hand-hold.
4. The combination in a passenger strap hanger, of a bar body, suspending means in connection with the upper end of the body, and a stirrup-shaped hand-hold revolubly vconnected to the lower end of the body.
5. The combination in a passenger strap hanger, of caps, one of which is provided with suspending means and the other provided with a hand-hold, and a bar body constructed of two strips of sheet material arranged face to face and detachably and re versably secured within the caps.
6. The combination in a passenger strap hanger, of a hanger rod ring composed of two separable sections, a bar body having means detachably connecting it with the ring, and a hand-hold in connection with the lower end of said body.
7. The combination in a passenger strap hanger, of a ring composed of two sections hinged together, each provided with an external lip, an eye having a shank revoluble in the lips of said rings, a hand-hold, caps respectively suspended in the eye and connected to the hand-hold, and a bar body- WM.
