WHEEL-FLANGE QIL-DISTBJIBUTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented dept. filth-393g.
Application filed February 5, 1918. Serial No. 215, rz7.
To all whom it may CWtt't:
CHARLES FREDERICK United States, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the State of Washington, United States of America, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Flange Gil-Distributers for Lubrieating the Flanges of Track-Vehicle Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to wheel flange lubricators'of the type disclosed in my companion application Serial N 0. 171,566, dated May 28, 1917, the object of my present invention being to provide a simple, reliable d inexpensive device, and it consists in the constructions, combinations and arrangements herein described and claimed.
Another object of my invention is to provide an oil distributer shoe, having an end adapted to fit over a wheel flange, and having a longitudinal cavity therein which provi es a source of least resistance which the normal wearing action of a revolving wheel flange will follow.
A further object of my invention is to provicle means for equalizing the normal wear within the discharge end of the oil distributer shoe, and to-that end I have designed ahollow distributer shoe, having walls of such relative proportions to each other, that the walls on either side of the wheel flange will feed-up fresh material, thereby compensating for lateral wear on their inner surfaces.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a detachable distributer shoe, of simple construction, and conveniently arranged for renewing the same as needed.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specifications, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
y invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which igure 1 is a view in side elevation, of a portion of a wheel flange, showing the oil distributer applied thereto.
F ig. 2 is a view in front elevation, of the wheel flange oil distributer.
Fig. 3 is a side plan view of the oil distributer shoe, showing a cavity extending longitudinally therein by dotted lines.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a portion of a wheel flange, and a top plan view of the oil distributer nal cavity and oil pipe by dotted lines.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a tapered look ing key.
Fig. 6 is a section on the lineBB of Fig. 4.
In carrying out my invention I have provided a bracket frame of a car truck by means of a bolt 3, or any similar form of attachment. In the end of the bar 2 adjacent the oil distributer, is a counter-sunk hole or eye 5, from which is suspended a hanger 6, bearing in its lower end a comparatively large opening or loop :7, adapted to have detachably secured therein the reduced end 8 of the distributer shoe 9. Said detachable means employs a con- Means for holding the key 11 in its respective position is provided by the spring 13, which has its central portion passed over the attaching bar 2 and the portions on each side of the center being wound around their respective spring bosses or lugs 4 and 4*, having the ends extended over their respective grooves 14 and 14 The spring 13 is also adapted for the further purpose of holding the distributor end 15 of the shoe 9 in contact with a revolving wheel flange, as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring .now to the construction of the distributor shoe 9, which may-beef any suit able material but preferably of cast steel, it is provided with an oblong cavity 16 (shown by dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4), having relatively proportioned wallsl7, 18, 19 and 20, so as to equalize the normal distributer shoe end 15 when the same is engaged with a revolving wheel flange. This cavity having properly proportioned walls serves as a source of least resistance which the wearing-action of a revolving wheel flange will follow. Thus it is seen that by constructing the walls as shown in Fig. 6, the shoe will submit to a continued feedingup action against the wheel flange. The wall 18 being the thickest of the walls, is
shoe, showing the longitudi subjected to the tread of the wheel as well as to the tread side of the flange, thereby receiving the most wear, while the opposite wall 17 is subjected only to the opposite side of the flange and receiving lateral wear only. It will be seen that the walls 19 and 20 will give way to a wearing action of the wheel flange fully as fast as the wall 18 will permit them to feed-up. Thus a continue feeding-up of fresh material to compensate for the lateral wearing action within the shoe end is accomplished, thereby mambeing applied.
taining a comparatively snug fit over the wheel, flange. A. pipe 21 extends parallel with and partially within the wall 18, having its discharge opening 23 in position for engaging the tread side of the wheel flange 1, while its end'opposite 22 projects through the reduced end 8 forming a nipple to which a hose or other flexible tube may be attached.
It should be understood that the distributer shoe may be constructed in pairs of right and left,,for discharging oil to the thread side of a wheel flange of either the right or left wheel of a car truck.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
A lubricating fluid tributer, by means of attaching a hose or other flexible tube to the nipple 22 The 2 is bent so as to conform itself to being attached to the frame of a car truck forholding the device in position to lubricate the flanges thereof. en in its normal position the spring 13 holds the distributer shoe in its attachment with its hanger by means of the tapered locking key 11, and simultaneously holds the distributor shoe in contact with the wheel flange. en it becomes necessary to renew the distributor shoe, the ends of the spring 13 may be lifted out of their respective grooves 14 and 14 and the key 11 driven out of the loop 7, thus releasing the shoe preparatory to a new one It is obvious that various are within the scope vvention, and
modifications and spirit of this in- I' do not limit myself to the specific construction shown.
Having thus described my invention, vghat' et- I I claim as new and desire to secure by ters Patent is:
