CLARA V. W. MOT'I', OF WEST ARLINGTON, MARYLAND.
ADJUSTABLE HAND-STRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
Application filed. February 3, 1916. Serial No. 75,942.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARA V. W. Mo'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Arlington, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hand-Straps for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to straps used in street cars as hand holds for the convenience of standing passengers. ordinarily constructed and mounted, can be readily grasped by persons of average height, but they are beyond the reach of many persons, especially ladies and children.
The invention therefore has for its object to provide a strap which is adjustable as to length, so that it may be drawn down low enough to be reached by short persons.
The invention also has for its object to provide an adjustable strap of the kind stated which is simple and inexpensive, it being made in one piece.
With the objects stated in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an edge view of the strap extended to its full length; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the strap shortened up.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a leather or other strap 5 having a suspension loop 6 at its upper end. whereby it is mounted on the usual supporting rod 7. The lower end of the strap is looped to form two hand holds as will be presently described. The two ends of the strap are riveted together, as indicated at 8, to form the loop 6. One of the ends 9 of the strap depending from the loop 6 is longer than the other depending end 10, and said end 9 has at its extremity a slide or eye 11 through which the end 10 loosely passes. The end 10 is riveted or otherwise fixed at its extremitv. as indicated at 12. to the end 9 at some distance from the slide 11.
These straps, as
The arrangement of the two depending ends of the strap as hereinbefore described, and the connection therebetween, provides a 'main and an auxiliary hand hold. The main hand hold is formed by that portion of the strap ends 9 and 10 connected at 12, and the auxiliary hand hold is formed by that portion of the strap end 9 which is below the connection 12, and has a sliding connection, by means of the slide 11, with the end 10.
To extend the auxiliary hand hold into position for use, the strap end carrying the slide 11 is drawn down to form a loop 13 as shown in Fig. 1. This loop is below the main hand hold, so that the strap is now within easy reach of short persons. The main hand hold may also be used with the auxiliary hand hold down; or the strap may be shortened up as shown in Fig. 3, this being done by moving the slide 11 upward on the strap end 10 until the end 9 carrying the slide lies closely against the outer face of the strap end 10.
The adjustment hereinbefore described can be readily made, and the device therefore effectually serves the purpose for which it is designed. The device is also very simple and inexpensive, and easily manufactured, as the entire strap is in one piece.
I claim:
1. A car strap having suspension means at the top, and two ends depending therefrom, one of said depending ends being shorter than the other end and connected to the longer end a distance from its extremity, and the extremity of the longer end having a sliding connection with the shorter end.
2. A car strap having suspension means at the top, and two ends depending therefrom, one of said depending ends being shorter than the other end and connected to the latter a distance from its extremity, and a slide on the extremity of the longer end, said slide being connected to the shorter end.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARA V. W. MOTT.
