INDIVIDUAL CAR-STRAP.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed April 7, 1913. Serial No. 759,509.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST MJLLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Individual Car-Straps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in car straps or hangers.
The straps or hangers provided in street cars for the support of the standing passengers, are usually elevated from the floor of the car at such a height, that it is inconvenient for shortpersons to grasp the straps.
It is a well known fact that street car straps carry the germs of disease, and it is an object of this invention to provide a strap which may be carried in the pocket of an individual for use in connection with the straps which are usually provided in street cars.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a stra which may be easily and quickly adjusted or use by persons of clifferent heights.
Still another object of this invention is the provision of an individual car strap comprising a hand hold and a hook for connection with the usual car strap, and a flexible adjustable connection between the hook and the hand hold.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel constructions and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved car strap showing it applied to a hanger; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the hand hold; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the manner of connecting the opposite ends of the cord which connects the hand hold and the supporting hook.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing, the numeral 1 designates a hand hold which is constructed of a casing 2 of soft leather or other similar material, the hand hold being preferably U-shaped and provided with a central stiffening rod 3. Suitable packing 4 is arranged about the stifl'ening rod to space the same from the leather casing, to present a soft surface to the hand of the user. Connected to the opposite ends of the hand hold are cylindrical caps 5, the upper ends of which are looped as at 6, and prpgect beyond the extremities of the hand Slidably arranged in the loops 6 is a flexible cord 7, one end of the cord being looped as at 8, in which the opposite end of the cord is slidably disposed, the said opposite end of the cord being provided with a knot 9 to prevent the disengagement of the ends of the cord. A hook 10 for engagement with the usual car stra is provided, the lowerend of the hook Feing looped as at 11, the cord being loosely disposed in the loop whereby the hand hold is allowed to oscillate freely when the user of the hanger sways, incident to the starting and stopping of the car.
My hanger may be readily attached to the car strap when it is desired for use by grasping the looped lower end 11 of the hook 10 and engaging the hook with the car strap, whereupon the hand hold 1 may be grasped in the ordinary manner.
The device may be adjusted for a person of any height, by simply forming the knot 9 in the cord at any distance from the extremity thereof, the knot upon engaging the loop 8 in the opposite end of the cord securely holding the device in its adjusted position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a supporting hook, a U-shaped hand hold, and a flexible cord connected to the opposite ends of said hand hold and to said hook, as and for the purpose described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a supporting hook, a U-shaped hand hold, a flexible cord slidably connected to the opposite ends of said hand hold and to said hook, and means for adjusting the length of said flexible cord, as and for the purpose described.
3. A device of the character described comprising a supporting hook, a U-shaped hand hold, a flexible cord slidably and adjustably connecting the opposite ends of said In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my hang 110%0} to said suppolrting hook, said signature in the presence of two Witnesses. han ho c conip'risin a eat 61 casing, a I r V stifiening rod centrall? arranged in said cas- AUGUST MILLER 5 ing and a soft packing arranged about said \Vitnesses:

Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each; by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. 0.
