JAMES BRAYSHAW, OF NORTH WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAMMOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1905.
Application filed June 15, 1905. Serial No. 265,404.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J AMES BRAYSHAW, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of North WVcymouth, in the county of Norfolkflommonwealth of Massachusetts,h ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is the construction of improved means for the suspension of hammocks, whereby both economy of construction is secured, together with durability and convenience in use.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of one extremity of 'a hammock made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the spreader used therewith, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the means lwhlelreby the suspension-rope is adjustably 1e c.
The hammock-body is indicated by the reference-numeral 1, and the manner in which I suspend it is by means of a hem 2 at either one or both ends, my preferable way being to have this hem at the foot of the hammock, while the head is supported in substantially the usual manner. Through said hem is run a rope retained in the eatenary curve 4 by means of the spreader 10, having terminal eyes 11, penetrated by said rope and held in position by the knots 5 immediately above said eyes. To better illustrate said rope-section 4, a portion of the hammock is represented as torn away in Fig. 1. The ends of this rope are knotted together at 7 and such knotted end brought over and secured to the body of the rope to form a loop 6 for the engagement of a hook, tree-bough, or any other suitable support. The means whereby I secure said knotted end to the body of the rope in a manner to permit of easy release and adjustment is as follows: Loose upon the rope 3 3 are three rings 15, 16, and 17. These rings being slid apart for a suitable distance, the knotted end 7 is first passed through the space between the two ropes 3 and 8 and the two rings 15 16 and thence down between said ropes or rope-sections and the two rings 16 and. 17. Then the rings are moved toward each other to substantially the positions shown in Fig. 3, and the knotted end is fixed in place. No matter how strong a pull may be exerted between the hammock and loop 6 the knotted end and rings will not slip. At any moment, however, by releasing the strain upon the loop the rings can be moved up or down along the rope-sections 3 3 and the knotted end with them without any difiiculty and in that manner the hammock brought to a higher or lower position of adjustment.
As the spreader 10 consists of nothing save a comparatively short length of heavy iron wire or slender rod, with its ends bent over into the eyes 11, and the three rings cost practically nothing, the expense of the hammock suspension aside from the rope is exceedingly small. At the same time it is readily adjusted, durable, and perfectly safe in use.
What Iclaim as my invention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
1. The combination with a hammock having a hem at its end, of a rope extending through said hem having knots close to said hems terminations, and a spreader having an eye at each end penetrated by said rope between a knot and the neighboring end of the hem.
2. The combination with a hammock having a hem at its end, of a rope extending through said hem having knots close thereto, and a spreader comprising a metal rod having an eye at each end formed by bending over the metal; said eyes being penetrated by the portion of said rope between said.knots and hammock.
3. The suspension device comprising a rope having its ends knotted together, and a plurality of rings inclosing two sections of said rope, whereby said knotted ends can be brought between the parts of the rope included between said rings and thereby locked in place.
4. The suspension device comprising a rope having its ends knotted together, and three rings inclosing two sections of said rope, whereby said knotted ends can be brought through the portions of the rope included between the first and second ring and also between the second and third, and thereby securely locked in place.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention 1 have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of June, 1905.
JAMES BRAYSHAVV.
