COMBINED CHAIR-SWING AND HAMMOCK.
Application filed February 13, 1915. Serial No 8,026.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, CHARLES E. EATON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belfast, in the county of Waldo and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Chair-Swings and Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved swing chair and hammock, which may be used either as a swing chair or as a hammock, and which when in use as a hammock is provided with an extension foot, the object of the invention being to provide an improved article of this kind which is extremely cheap and simple, which may be readily swung and adjusted from any suitable overhead support, such as a porch roof or limb of a tree and which may be readily arranged for use either as a swing chair or as a hammock.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved combined swing chair and hammock, showing the same arranged for use as a swing chair. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same arranged for use as a hammock. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan of the same. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary inverted plan of the same.
In the embodiment of my invention I pros vide a main frame 1 and an adjustable or extension frame 2. The main frame comprises a pair of arcuate side bars 3 and a pair of cross rungs 45 which connect the opposite ends of said side bars, the said rungs having reduced end portions which are detachably fitted in openings in the said side bar.
The extension or adjustable frame 2 comprises a pair of arcuate side bars 6, which are of the same radius, as but are shorter than the bars 3, and a rung 7 which connects said bars 6 at a point near their outer ends. The width of the space between the bars 6 is equal to the extreme width of the frame 1 so that the bars 6 are arranged on the outer sides of the bars 3, the frame 2 being thereby slidably and adjustably related to the frame 1. The bars 3 are provided at a point near the rung 5 and on their lower sides with outwardly extending keepers 8 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
on which the lower sides of the bars 6 slidably bear. Said bars 6 are provided at their inner ends, on their lower sides, with slides 9 which are hook shaped and bear against the lower and inner sides of the bars 3. Said bars 6 are also provided, on their upper sides, and at points a suitable distance from the slides 9 with inwardly extending slides 10, which bear on the upper sides of the bars 3. Hence the frame 2 may be adjusted longitudinally and also angularly with respect to the frame 1 to adapt the device to be arranged for use either as a swing chair or as a hammock.
The bottom 11 of the combined swing chair and hammock is made of any suitable fabric such for instance as canvas, duck or kaki and is provided at its inner ends with cases 12-13 for the reception, respectively, of the rungs 4.7 and is provided at a suitable point with a casing 14 which may also be engaged by the rung 5. A suitable pillow 15 is here shown at the upper end of the bottom. The article will also be provided with a movable cushion 16.
Suspending ropes 17 are provided for the frame 1 each of these ropes being provided at an intermediate point with a ring or link 18 which may be readily attached to an overhead hook or other supporting object, the ends of the ropes diverging downwardly, being passed through and slidably engaged with eyes or other attaching devices 19 on the bars 3, near the ends of said bars. the extreme ends of said bars, being provided with attaching and adjusting devices 20. Hence the suspending ropes may be adjusted as required to arrange the article in position for use as a chair, as shown in Figs. 1-2 or in position for use as a hammock shown in Figs. 34 5. l/Vhen arranged for use as a chair the casing 14 is engaged with the rung 5 so that the portion of the bottom between the rungs 45 forms the back and the portion between the rungs 57 forms the seat of the chair. When the article is arranged for use as a hammock the casing 14 is disengaged from the rung 5. The frame 2 forms an extension for the said hammock as will be understood, the weight of the person in the hammock tending to draw the extension foot inwardly and shorten the hammock and the pressure of the feet of the user against the rung 7 or contiguous part of the bottom counteracting his weight so that the hammock autoframe, an extension frame slidably connect- 1) ed to one end of the suspended frame and a bottom of flexible material attached at its ends to end members of said frames, the first namedfr'ame also having a rung at its inner or lower end and said bottom having 'means to detachably secure the same to said :ru-ng.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
