\VILLIAM A. SEIBERT, OF EAS'ION, PENNSYLVANIA.
RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,326, dated September 11, 1888.
Application filed June 18, 1888. Serial No. 276,923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. SEIBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Racks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in racks, having for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient rack, which may be attached to the head-board of a bedstead and may be folded back out of the way during the day and extended at night.
The invention consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of the head-board of a bedstead provided with the improved rack. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the guides.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame of the rack, which comprises the main bar B, provided at its lower end with the eye I) and at its upper end the segmental arm 0, all points of which are equidistant from the eye b. This segmental arm is provided at its free end with the horizontal parallel cars a 0, between which is pivoted the ear (I on the inner end of the swinging extension D. The upper end of the main bar B is bent outward to form, in connection with the inner end of the segmental arm 0, a loop, E. A thumbscrew, F, passes through the eye at the lower end of the main bar and engages the headboard, whereby the rack is pivoted thereto, and the guides (l G are engaged in the headboard and are provided with open springmetal guide rings g g, embraei u g the segmental arm C. When the upper end of the rack is swung outward, as shown in full lines in the drawings, the guides pass into the loop E and allow the main bar to assume a vertical position.
H I K L represent, respectively, swinging arms, which are swiveled to the main bar by means of sleeves or loops h ik Zon their inner ends, mounted in annular grooves in the said main bar. The arms may be of any preferred (No model.)
shape to suit the various positions in which the rack may be used; but they are preferably formed about as follows: The arm H is straight. The arm I is provided at its outer end with a slight depression or book, i. The arm K is provided with a deep hook, It, and the arm L is very short and is provided with a reversed hook, Z. It will be noted that the arms are of varying sizes, with the longest arranged at the top of the rack and decreasing regularly in length toward the bottom thereof.
During the day orwhen not in use the rack may be swung inward until covered by the edge of the head-board, and the rack will be held in either the folded or extended position by the spring-metal rings of the guides G. Vheu the rack is extended, the swinging arms may be arranged in any desired angles or positions to conveniently support the clothing.
Having th's described my invention, I claim 1. In a rack, the main bar pivoted at its lower end to the head-board of a bedstead, the segmental arm rigid with the main bar and operating in stationary guides on the headboard, and the swinging arms carried by the main bar, substantially as specified.
2. In a rack, the combination of the main bar pivoted at its lower end and provided at its upper end with a segmental arm operating in suitable stationary guides, the swinging extension pivoted to the free end of the segmental arm, and the swinging arms swiveled to the main bar, substantially as specified.
8. In a rack, the combinatiomwith the main bar pivoted at its lower end and provided at its upper end with a segmental arm, and the swinging arms swiveled on the main bar, of the guides having the open spring-metal rings embracing the segmental arm and adapted to hold the rack at the desired adjustment, sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IVILLIAM A. SEIBERT.
